Niles's True Nature

"Major Spoilers Ahead!"
This Article Contains Spoilers - WARNING: Niles wanted to inform you that the article you're about to read contains spoilers. Turn back now and read a different article if you have not watched/played/read the following works yet.

William Afton, also known as the Purple Guy, is the main antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise. An enigmatic and mysterious serial killer, William was the founder of Fazbear Entertainment, business partner of Henry Emily and the father of Michael and Elizabeth Afton, as well as the Crying Child.

Despite his success as a businessman, Afton, for little known reasons, was a serial child murderer who killed multiple children across multiple restaurants, including Henry’s daughter Charlie, as well as creating Circus Baby’s Pizza World to use the animatronics as death machines to capture and kill kids. After being confronted with the ghosts of the dead children, Afton ended up spring locked in a Spring Bonnie suit, leaving him into the monstrous Springtrap.

He is voiced by PJ Heywood.

What Makes Him A Base-Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Him?[]

  • His enigmatic appearance and mysterious nature made him a source of theories and interpretations over the years, as well as build a presence of eeriness and many fans of considered him cool due to his mysteriousness.
    • With that, he is frequently the subject of multiple memes and famous fan songs such as The Living Tombstone and the "Man Behind the Slaughter" meme.
  • Despite his at first vague portrayal if one reads between the lines in the games they can understand his true characterization. This makes him all the more interesting to learn about and theorize.
  • William’s uniquely horrific actions of specifically killing kids, his irredeemably malevolent nature which consists of, arrogance, sadism, and a love for leaving a trail of destruction and sorrow whenever he goes as well as his fear of dying and going to hell have all made many consider him a very terrifying, complex and divisive villain for the franchise.
  • William’s lack of a backstory and ambiguity has led to several interesting interpretations and theories as to why he became a serial killer. Some believe he had a tragic past, others think he was driven to madness by the loss of his family. However the general popular consensus is that he was just a sadistic monster who enjoyed making people suffer which essentially makes him a mysterious absolute and a force of nature.
  • Every horrific fate William suffers is always perfectly portrayed by the story as poetic karmic justice for his unspeakable atrocities and not for the slightest bit of sympathy.
  • His appearance as Springtrap has been subjected to praise due to its amazing design, being considered amazing and effective at being creepy and terrifying, fitting the mood of the third game.
  • His voice actor, PJ Heywood, does an effective voice, making William sound sophisticated and calm yet still completely malevolent and sadistic from what little we hear of him. Heywood even claims that William’s voice is based off Hannibal Lector.

What Do People Hate About Him?[]

  • While his mysterious nature is often praised, it can also be criticized, with many people seeing his lack of character and focus as the main antagonist wasting his character.
    • Some detractors also usually declare that Afton is too one-dimensional, especially when Sister Location and The Fourth Closet came out (despite the latter taking place in a different continuity) and implied/revealed he is a scientist who experiments on souls, with a very vocal part of the fandom thinking that William became a over the top and unrealistic supervillain than the more grounded enigmatic serial killer in the original games
    • Some also have issues with his crimes, labeling them as inconsistent or idiotic, such as with leaving his young daughter with the dangerous and colorful Circus Baby all alone despite the fact he apparently didn't want her to die and never let her play with her.
  • He is often criticized for his overabundance in the story and constantly being resurrected, despite his lack of full backstory or motives, with many thinking he is overused, that him constantly coming back is a cheap move, and that the series should move on by introducing a new villain. Those complaints would die down after the release of the Ruin DLC and the Tales from the Pizzaplex books, which introduce a new villain called The Mimic who will now be the big bad going forward, with Afton dying for good. However, Mimic turned out to be just as controversial for his own reasons.
  • Scraptrap’s design is frequently mocked due to the ugliness of the design, frequently calling him a "peanut" and comparing him to Jimmy Neutron due to the forehead.
