What Do People Like About Her?

• Viewers praise her realistic portrayal in the film as an ordinary mother who is just coming to terms with the fact that her husband is a total psychopath without any humanizing traits. That being the case, she does everything she can to protect her son from that man.
• She manages to outsmart Jack and get Danny to safety.
• There was a deleted scene where she and her son are recovering from their ordeal at a hospital when Stuart Ullman comes to see them, which shows that her story ends on a happy note.
• Despite his harsh treatment towards Shelly during production, Stanley Kubrick admitted that he was impressed with her performance.

What Do People Hate About Her?

• Others, including Stephen King himself, dislike how she is portrayed as a timid female character who spends much of the film crying and hyperventilating, unlike her book counterpart who was a much more powerful character and wasn't easily dragged down by fear.
• She makes very little effort to stand up to Jack whenever he verbally abuses her, that is until she knocks him out with a baseball bat and locks him in the pantry. In real life, a woman who had put up Jack for that long would've filed for divorce long before the events of the film.
