The Unpleasant Gradient, also known as simply Unpleasant, is a minor character in The Axolotl Sun's 2020 Roblox game Regretevator. They are a walking gradient of a horrible color combination, having shown up in Infected's apartment one day and wouldn't leave. On the chance that the elevator reaches that floor, suddenly Unpleasant is everyone else's problem as well.

What Makes Them a Base Breaking Character?

What Do People Like About Them?

• The entire gimmick of a mute, completely static image somehow earning the ire of absolutely everyone they come across makes them seem like a natural fit into the zany world of Regretevator. Because of their whole status, they tend to be ironically hated on by fans to continue the joke.
• While some fans hate them for everything they've done to Infected, others see their inclusion as either a good way to build up lore for Infected, giving him something unrelated to their illness to worry about, or at least making her more sympathetic by having to deal with Unpleasant on a day-to-day basis. Some fans even derive comedy from having Infected being (unwilling) roommates with Unpleasant.

What Do People Hate About Them?

• As funny as the joke can be, their entire gimmick does leave Unpleasant feeling flat as a character. As they cannot properly interact with anyone, Unpleasant can be seen as one of the least interesting people who can visit the elevator, with some unironically hating whenever they show up.
  • Since there can only be four main NPCs in the elevator at a time, the jokey nature of Unpleasant can be seen as a wasted slot, preventing players from getting interactions with any other NPCs. Furthermore, since the joke of Unpleasant being hated is the only thing that anyone has to say about them, it can cause the joke to get old really quickly.
  • Additionally, Unpleasant can appear on the exact same floor as Infected, and replaces him on occasion. While they are slightly contentious, Infected has a far wider range of interactions and interesting character conflicts.
• Unpleasant's color palette is intentionally an eyesore. As much as it contributes to the joke, this makes Unpleasant rather hard to look at. It doesn't help that they are solely a solid gradient, and have no other design features to help them be interesting or stand out.
• Some fans, especially those who are fans of Infected, can find everything that Unpleasant has done to him needlessly cruel, such as breaking into their apartment and living there, breaking his skateboard, and presumably eating their pet cat Poptart.

Trivia

• Unpleasant did not technically originate from Regretevator, instead being a pre-existing meme taken beforehand. The meme alone does not really count as a base breaking character, as Unpleasant is not really a character there.
