~ Ultima |
Ultima (アルテマ, Arutema) is the true main antagonist of 2023 action RPG high fantasy video game Final Fantasy XVI. He is the God of Valisthea who created the world but left humanity out of narcissism. He plans to use Clive Rosfield, whom he bynamed "mythos", as a vessel to destroy the world and recreate it in his own image. Years after Annabella successfully betrayed and destroyed The Grand Duchy of Rosaria, Ultima possesses her newest son, Olivier Lesage, unknown to his mother during her rule in Sanbreque.
He is voiced by Mitsuru Miyamoto in Japanese dub, and Harry Lloyd in English dub.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- Harry Lloyd's performance in the English dub caught attention from JRPG players who played Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
- Some fans adored Ultima being the mastermind of everything wrong with Valisthea.
- Is considered to be an effective big bad even by the likes of JRPG fans who played Xenoblade Chronicles.
- He is based of Zanza from XC1. Both Zanza and Ultima were Demiurge derivatives.
- Despite being a clichéd evil god villain, at least Ifrit Risen (Clive and Joshua) serves as a foreshadowing of why Ultima takes interest to the dominants of eikons of fire to remake the world in his own image. In which Ultima at least was foreshadowed better than Necron from Final Fantasy IX.
- His defeat, being punched by Clive after done his Final Fantasy title drop, so hard that it deals 999999 damage, is played for satisfaction. Because of being a lengthy final boss with multiple transformed forms as Ultima Risen and Ultimalius, as well as being a hypocritically narcissistic god.
- If Clive manages to tame Leviathan, the profaned Eikon of Water in The Rising Tide DLC, Ultima praises him and giving a portion of his abilities. Regardless, Clive correctly suspects that it was another ploy to use him as a suitable vessel.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Compared to the other characters in Final Fantasy XVI, Ultima is considered to be a Generic JRPG Almighty Evil God villain in the world of Game-of-Thrones-like derivatives.
- Some of the fanbase were tired of the "Kill the God" clichéd finale, despite being the recurring plot of JRPG games.
- It's revealed that Ultima considered Leviathan to be no longer worth of his attention from being a "profaned" element in The Rising Tide DLC because of the dominant was literally an infant named Waljas. In other words, Ultima made Leviathan a deliberate wasted potential that it barely affects the outcome of the main story.
- Despite being the big bad, Ultima's popularity is easily overshadowed by the human villains such as Hugo Kupka, Barnabas Tharmr, and Annabella Rosfield, Clive's most personal villains.
- Queen Annabella is much more memorable in a love-to-hate fashion in spite of being Ultima's mortal foil for her irrational hatred to the Branded, creating a twisted ideology of The Black Shields faction to oppress them and sold one of his sons, Clive Rosfield into a Slave Soldier of Sanbreque Empire to spite her husband, Elwin. Additionally, Annabella being an entitled, hypocritical, and narcissistic parent / ruler is something much more realistic threat than the Evil God / Demiurge Stand-In, as Jerks worse than villains trope is in effect.
- Hugo Kupka, the dominant of Titan on the other hand, is Clive's Shadow Archetype who have pillaged the remains of Grand Duchy of Rosaria just to find and kill anyone taking the name of "Cid" as a revenge for killing Benedikta. However, Clive tells Hugo that Clive himself, as Ifrit was responsible for killing Benedikta to show the truth and calling out Kupka's senseless slaughter as an act of revenge, deconstructing Kupka's sympathetic qualities. We also get to see what Kupka fears when he's hallucinating, being a cuckold.
- Lastly, Barnabas Tharmr, the dominant of Odin is a brilliant attempt of the game's archetypal Dark Lord after Garland, Gabranth and others, despite being Ultima's enforcer. Barnabas was adored by the audience for being a Vergil-like boss fight complete with the fight taking place on the top of an ominously tall tower during the storm.
