“ | I lived my life by your mandates! I dedicated my life to your mandates! I only ever did what you asked of me, what you told me to be and trained me to do, and I did it. And I did it well. You built me. | „ |
~ John Walker to the United States Senate, his most famous quote |
Jonathan F. "John" Walker, formerly known as Captain America and later known as U.S. Agent, is a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe television series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the upcoming Thunderbolts* Film.
He is a former Captain of the United States Army's 75th Rangers Regiment who was chosen to succeed Steve Rogers as the second Captain America after Sam Wilson gave the shield to the US Government. Walker archived numerous acts of valor since he graduated from the Military Academy in 2010 and became the first person in American history to receive three Medals of Honor during his service in Afghanistan. So, it was for the US Government the logical choice for being the new Captain America.
He is portrayed by Wyatt Russell.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
“ | I'm not trying to be Steve. I'm not trying to replace Steve. I'm just trying to be the best Captain America I can be. | „ |
~ John Walker |
- Even with all his flaws, most people say that he’s still a good person with his heart in the right place; he even won 3 medals of honor.
- Some people argue that his flaws give a Captain America character more depth as a complete deconstruction of the normally very heroic role he was meant to play.
- In fact, some people think from all Captain America versions until then he’s the most realistic and human, as someone who would provoke the enemy rather than try to utilize reason and listen to the situation.
- Carrying such an immense pressure as the new Captain America on the shoulders is something most people would break down from. John did his best to overplay his insecurities by taking on a hawkish approach, but it was just too hard.
- When Walker killed Nico, this was mere minutes or seconds after he lost his best friend since high school and only true Allie Lemar Hoskins. Even when it’s true that killing is wrong, many said they wouldn’t react differently.
- Also, many said, even when Nico didn’t kill Lemar himself, he’s still an accomplice of the real Killer and a terrorist who was trying to kill John himself seconds earlier (and was a super-soldier, so basically a walking threat). So arguably he deserved it.
- Speaking of which, he is a tragic person, serving in Afghanistan, days he considered as the worst of his life, never really considered by potential allies as a true Captain America, lost his best friend, lost the title of Captain America and lost all of his honors in the US military. He wouldn’t even receive VA benefits.
- He saved Sam and Bucky from the Flag-smashers and later saved Lemar as well. He then got Bucky out of jail and therapy as well.
- Fans of him hated how the other characters like Bucky Barnes never gave him a chance to really prove himself and how he had to gave away everything he worked so hard for after just one mistake of him, while guys like Bucky or even Steve Rogers killed much more people than him.
- Some said, that he’s the representation of how real veterans of the US Army are treated in America.
- And his fans hated that Falcon watches the Flag-Smashers with much more sympathy and understanding than him despite them being terrorists who risked and took so many lives. These people are calling this hypocrisy.
- Even after he lost nearly everything he cared about, he refused to give up and build a new shield himself with his honor medals. Nearly everyone liked his determination in this moment.
- After everything that happened, when he came back for revenge against Karli, he ultimately let go of his desire for revenge, even throwing his makeshift shield to the ground and saved the truck of hostages.
- Helped Bucky bring the Flag-smashers by getting the police rather than taking his revenge. He later nodded at Sam in respect after his speech.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
“ | A word of advice then… Stay the hell out of my way. | „ |
~ Walker threatening Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. |
- Detractors point out that despite intentionally being written with flaws, even in his best moments, he didn’t reach the level which Steve Rogers as Captain America was known for. He has a quite similar way to be the choice, being a patriotic soldier who wants to serve his country, with selflessness and braveness and John really admires Steve Rogers but still couldn’t reach him at all.
- In fact, some even call him a cheap knock-off. They invented the term “Walmart Cap”.
- Even after he took the Super Soldier Serum, he’s portrayed as way too weak and pathetic despite his brutal nature. For example, when he couldn’t stop the Truck from falling of the building.
- In the end, even those who are mostly neutral consider him as wasted potential. He could be an impressive Underdog, who ends up being as good as Steve, or he could betray the people who treated him wrong, like the government and end up on the bad side. Both ways could be more entertaining, cooler, or even more realistic. But instead, Marvel tried to paint him as incompetent, arrogant, and simply hateable but still as an Anti-Hero like. He could be extremely well pleased by the community if he would be a pure main protagonist hero or a fallen antagonist hero.
Trivia[]
- John Walker could be even the most base-breaking character of the whole MCU.
- On the hate-side the watchers hated Walker so much, that they created whole meme pages only to spite him. Hell, Wyatt Russell even received death-threats for his portrayal.
- On the Like-Side many people said that he’s by far the best-written character of the whole series and potentially one of the better anti-heroes in the MCU with his depths and his three-dimensional personality. And they say that Wyatt Russell did an excellent job. Some even said, that he’s one of the best characters of the whole MCU.
- Since he is to appear in the upcoming MCU film, Thunderbolts *, it’s possible that his reception could change.
