NOTE: This page mainly focuses on Tyrion Lannister in the TV series since his book counterpart is too well-received.

Let me give you some advice, bastard: never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.
~ Tyrion's advice to Jon
I did not kill Joffrey, but I wish that I had! Watching your vicious bastard die gave me more relief than a thousand lying whores! I wish I were the monster you think I am! I wish I had enough poison for the whole pack of you! I would gladly give my life to watch you all swallow it!
~ Tyrion's speech during his trial, where he admits he wanted Joffrey dead

Tyrion Lannister is one of the main protagonists of the HBO fantasy show Game of Thrones, the adaptation to the novel series A Song of Ice and Fire. He is the youngest of Lord Tywin's children and member of House Lannister, one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the Seven Kingdoms. However, in contrast to his family, Tyrion is shown to be a more benevolent and caring person, albeit one tied down by his flaws and the pain of his past. Although he is a physical dwarf, he manages to survive using his wit and intelligence.

He was portrayed by Peter Dinklage.

What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Him?[]

  • He used to be the favorite character of many who started watching the show for many reasons:
    • His charm and charisma, using his cunning to get himself out of trouble at any moment. He's by far one of the smartest characters on the show (at least in the first four seasons).
    • His sarcasm and blunt personality, making many of his scenes entertaining and funny. He's always pleasant to watch when he puts others back to their place, especially despicable characters like Joffrey.
    • He's also shown to be kind to those he likes, such as Bran, Jon, Sansa, and Shae. He can have a gentle and selfless heart at times when he's not outsmarting others.
    • His tragic backstory is also compelling, Tyrion being a sympathetic character who was always laughed at by everyone and mistreated by his father all for being a dwarf. He also loses many loved ones, like Shae who turns against him to slander him at his trial.
    • He has many memorable quotes, like his advices to Jon, "I drink, and I know things", or "I did not kill Joffrey, but I wish that I had!". He's probably one of the most quotable characters in the show.
    • Tyrion is often regarded to be Peter Dinklage's best role in his entiere career as well as his best performance. His speech during his trial is often regarded to be one of the most moving and well-acted scenes in the show.
    • Mostly in the latter seasons, he does have many awkward and funny moments where he ends up making fun of himself, although not everyone was pleased by that kind of scenes.
  • Overall, Tyrion is often considered to be one of the most iconic and beloved characters in Game of Thrones, even being George R.R Martin's favorite character, which just shows how great of a character he is.

What Do People Hate About Him?[]

  • Despite being a beloved character in the first four seasons, Tyrion quickly fell down in quality in the latter seasons:
    • Most of his funny scenes, instead of showing how smart he can be, just makes fun of him, such as the scene where he throws up after arriving in Essos or when Jorah knocks him out after Tyrion wouldn't stop mumbling through his gag. Tyrion went from being a charming manipulator to the butt-monkey of many jokes.
    • His plans keep failing and sometimes are borderline idiotic, such as when he tries to negociate with the Masters but they come back to burn down Mereen anyway, his plan to extract a wight Beyond-The-Wall and bring it to Cersei, or all of his invasion attempts being thwarted by Euron Greyjoy in the beginning of Season 7. Tyrion's failures not only make him look stupid but also get many people killed for nothing, like the Sand Snakes, Thoros of Myr, and Viserion.
    • His lines went from inspiring and thought-provoking to confusing and downright cringeworthy, such as him taunting Varys for being an eunuch in a very vulgar way, or his whole speech to justify Bran's claim to the Iron Throne simply because "he has the best story". That scene is considered to be Tyrion's very worst, simply because Bran did absolutely nothing useful within the story, and everyone else had more interesting story arcs and did much more.
