This is my life's work. I mean, since I was a little kid I-I dreamt big. Y'know, I've always wanted to be an international drug dealer and...weapons trader.
~ Trevor explaining his life's work to Tao Cheng and his translator.
What happens in the dark, comes out in the light.
~ Trevor Philips to Michael De Santa in Bury the Hatchet.

Trevor Philips is one of the three main protagonists (alongside Michael De Santa and Franklin Clinton) of the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V.

He is a career criminal and former bank robber, who later founded his own company, Trevor Philips Enterprises, that does drug dealing and weapon smuggling in Blaine County. He is the oldest and best friend of the second protagonist, Michael Townley (now called Michael De Santa), whom he believed to be dead for almost a decade after he faked his death to retire from the criminal life. Trevor would also befriend the third protagonist, Franklin Clinton, becoming somewhat of a mentor figure to him.

He is voiced by Steven Ogg.

What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Him?[]

  • Many fans loved his psychotic behavior as that makes him one of the few GTA protagonist that is willing to commit popular actions from the players such as murder, which makes him very popular with the majority of GTA players.
  • Steven Ogg gives out an amazing performance of Trevor.
  • He has a lot of funny moments within the gameplay and story, both dark and light such as when the player switches to Trevor, he can be seen doing various activities such as throwing a guy off a bridge; waking up in the middle of the desert wearing a dress; or being chased by police after beating someone off screen.
  • He has shown that he is very smart, an example being that in the mission, "Hood Safari" he is able to deduct that the dealer that was meeting with Franklin and Lamar was tricking them and ripping them off resulting in the brick being discovered as drywall, another was in "Bury The Hatchet" in which Trevor finds out that Michael is lying about Brad and that after putting the pieces together figures out that Michael fakes his death so that he could leave the criminal life, while Brad (whom Trevor thought was alive in prison prior) is the one who got buried in Michael's grave.
  • He also has a gentle side to him, for example, he cares for Michael's kids, Jimmy, who calls him "Uncle T" and Tracey, who share a hug with him in "Fame and Shame" showing that Trevor has a softer side.
  • In the infamous mission, "By the Book"; he also tried to save Mr. Kerimov by dropping him by the airport instead of his home because it's possible that had Steve Haines find out Trevor didn't kill Mr. Kerimov, he might go after his family. It also shows that he has a "moral code" and one of that code's traits was that Trevor was against torture.
    • Futhermore, if Kerimov were to die during the session, Trevor would defend himself by pointing out that he doesn't even know why he was torturing Kerimov, whom he knows was innocent the whole time.
  • Even though he's the evilest out of the Trio, even Trevor has some standards. For example, he despises and is disgusted by Steve Haines due to the latter's greed and egotistical behavior, as well as forcing him to torture Mr. Kerimov for information when it was clear that he barely knew anything.
  • He is considered to be one of the series' most complex characters as there was a lot of depth put into him that makes him less of just a psychotic criminal, examples include helping Michael prevent Tracey from being publicly humiliated on Fame or Shame, developing a good friendship with Franklin and Lamar and is willing to help the two of them with almost anything throughout the story, which shows that he is loyal to his closest allies, including Ron and Wade whom he consisted abused. He also became emotionally attached to Patricia Madrazo, whom he kidnaps and was sadden when she had to return to her husband, and in the mission, "Mrs Philips", Trevor has an emotional breakdown when he doesn't find his mom in his trailer anymore.
    • On that sidenote, if Franklin were to choose to kill Michael in the non-canon Ending B, Trevor would not join in and if Franklin were to call Trevor on his way to kill Michael, Trevor would get enraged, refuses to help him and if Michael were to die, Trevor would sever all ties to Franklin, showing that despite having a falling out with Michael during the latter point of the story, he doesn't like traitors.
  • Fans really loved Trevor's special ability which makes him invincible to all forms of damage for a period of time which is useful for players who wanted to kill NPCs, gangs, cops, NOOSE Team, FIB Agents and the Military and they love the fact that they can cheese the recharge special ability cheat while his rage ability is activated.
  • Players have also enjoyed the missions where he goes on a rampage against an endless horde of whoever angers him off enough and he would win said rampages. He even once fought a horde of U.S Army Soldiers and a tank in one of those rampages.
  • Trevor's special ability is reminiscent to and similar to Blind Rage Mode in the video game Scarface: The World Is Yours where the camera switches from third-person to first person, Tony Montana becomes invulnerable to all forms of damage, is given infinite ammunition for all weapons, deals more damage, auto-targets an extreme amount of enemies at once and every kill replenishes his health meter to full.
  • Trevor's special ability is also reminiscent to and similar to Slaughter Mode from the video game The Punisher where Frank Castle becomes invulnerable to all forms of damage, his melee attacks deal more damage, is given infinite throwing knives and his health meter regenerates to full.
  • Trevor's special ability is thirdly reminiscent to and similar to the Agro special move from Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition and Midnight Club: Los Angeles where the player's vehicle becomes indestructible to all forms of damage and deals more damage to racers, police vehicles, traffic and objects.

What Do People Hate About Him?[]

  • Although there are fans who do loved Trevor's psychotic behavior, there are detractions who feel like it was forced, and they deem Trevor to be an edgelord because of that.
  • Despite being considered one of the most complex GTA characters, some fans considered Trevor, along with Franklin to be more undeveloped compared to Micheal.
  • One of his main missions, "By the Book", where he tortures Mr. K, an innocent man became controversial even though the mission's theme is that torture is an inefficient method of interrogation.
  • Detractions hate that most or at least Trevor's dialogue consists of him being a jerk to almost everyone whom he interacted with.
  • Many detractions felt like his psychotic behavior is a trouble for the other main characters, going to the point where said detractions considers him to be GTA V's true villain.
  • Some of his actions make some detractions uncomfortable such as eating a bowl of what seem to be like human waste, followed by him throwing up said waste sometime later.
  • It's also implied that Trevor is a cannibal and has r*ped before, which makes him more despised by his detractors even more.
  • Perhaps the most INFAMOUS moment of Trevor that all of his detractions hated was him murdering Johnny Klebitz, one of the main protagonists of GTA 4 as fans of the latter hated that their favorite character go out in such a lame way that fans of the Lost choose Ending A (Kill Trevor) as a way to avenge Johnny and the Lost. It also doesn't help the fact that Trevor was having an affair with Johnny's girlfriend, Ashely. To this very day, there are many detractions who won't forgive Trevor for killing Johnny.
    • On that side note, players do have the option of sending Packie McReary from GTA 4 to the Altruist Cult where he can be killed by the cult and receive $1,000 when playing as Trevor, even though the death is considered non-canon and that Packie can be recruited as a crew member where he is considered one of the best crewmates within the game, it still gives Trevor the negative repetition of killing off two beloved GTA IV characters.
  • Overall, Trevor's detractions dislike him because he's potentially a cannibal, a rapist, an abusive bully, a sociopath with mommy issues, and due to the fact, he was introduced by killing off Johnny Klebitz to the point where many of his detractors choose Ending A (Kill Trevor). It goes to the point where some of these detractors wanting Ending A to be canon.

Trivia[]

  • Trevor, along with Micheal De Santa, Steve Haines, Devin Weston, Lamar Devins, Jimmy De Santa and Tracy De Santa are the only characters from GTA V to be considered Base Breaking Characters.
  • Trevor is currently the icon for the Character Killers category.
