~ Tingle |
Tingle is a minor recurring character in The Legend of Zelda franchise and made his first appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. He is also the main protagonist in the Tingle spinoff series where he gets his own adventures.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- In Europe, Tingle is fairly beloved, where in Japan, he is incredibly popular. So much that he is able to get his own spin-off games that feature him as the main protagonist. It's not surprising that the poll for adding Tingle in Hyrule Warriors has upvotes from the fans who live in Japan which allowed him to be included in the game.
- Tingle is considered to be one of the most amusing and funny characters in the series, such as shooting his balloon and he falls to the ground, and he even appears as an Assist Trophy where random events happen when he gives his famous magic words, and one of them has him floating away on his balloon, his animations in Hyrule Warriors where he takes damage, and several NPC characters like Ricky the Kangeroo and various characters in Breath of the Wild either drawing their weapons or reacting in horror when the full Tingle set is worn.
- Even before his reputation went downhill in America, he was a tolerable character in Majora's Mask since he was an optional character to speak to and is very helpful to Link by selling him his maps at reasonable prices which helps make navigating Termina much easier and his rather creepy design has its way of fitting into the darker toned game.
- As unpopular as he is in America, players weren't happy to learn that he was officially added in the Hyrule Warriors roster when they opt to play as Skull Kid instead, those who did give Tingle a chance managed to give him some respect and noticed that his design looked less hideous along with his clownish moveset that they find Tingle to be the most tolerable and not as annoying or creepy as they found him to be in previous games.
What Do People Dislike About Him?[]
- Starting with the lighter-toned The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, his reputation began to decay in America where he is portrayed as being less likable, where he forces his brothers to spin the Tingle Tower, and one fellow David Jr. was in debt slavery to him and wishes that the estranged brother Knuckle would take his place. To top it off, during the Triforce Chart sidequest, Tingle is also intrusive in this game and will charge a huge sum of Rupees each just to get them deciphered if one has shallow pockets. This was addressed in the remake where the Triforce Charts were reduced to three, meaning only three visits to Tingle to get them translated and the Tingle Bottle made him less prominent than the Tingle Tuner in the GameCube version.
- When the Tingle series was considered for localization and the poll was made, he was already unpopular enough in this region for the US Zelda fanbase to vote against its import which resulted in the series never making it past their shores.
- Even if his unpopularity within the States weren't the problem, he has his annoying moments, especially in Four Swords Adventures where if the Force Gems where not picked up quickly enough, Tingle will end up stealing them, and the fact that he is very childish for someone his age.
