The Sultan is the overarching protagonist of Disney's 31st full-length animated feature film, Aladdin. As ruler of Agrabah, he is the kind-hearted but bumbling father of Princess Jasmine.
In the original film, he was voiced by the late Douglas Seale. In the sequels and the TV series, he was voiced by the late Val Bettin and later Jeff Bennett, who also voiced Lord Duke in Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams. In the 2019 live-action remake, he was played by Navid Negahban.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- Most fans like him for his fatherly and caring traits over his kingdom and his daughter Jasmine, such as ensuring her happiness as he decided to let her marry whoever she deems worthy, in the aftermath of Jafar's first defeat.
- People appreciate he is among the third of fathers in a Disney Princess film to remain alive, after King Stefan and King Triton, as well as many fathers in general to do so.
- While he did keep Jasmine from the outside world, this was only due to her being a princess and wanted to ensure her safety.
- Later in the film, he did change the law to allow Jasmine to marry the man she chooses, which is Aladdin, after Jafar was defeated for the first time and when Agrabah is saved.
- The performances by Douglas Seale and Val Bettin fit quite well with the character regarding his stern, fatherly and caring traits.
- Even if some people have mixed thoughts about the two sequels that came after the first Aladdin, they also appreciate he isn't as stubborn or naive as he was in the first film.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Despite trying to protect Jasmine, his detractors don't like how the writers didn’t give him a proper reason for being overprotective to Jasmine by initially prioritizing traditions of trying to find a rightable suitor for her, dismissing her feelings and goals and isolating her from the outside world. They felt it can be rather annoying and too much for themselves to view him as a good father.
- Some detractors also don't like him for being too childish, naive and oblivious that they claim he's not a competent ruler, as well as criticizing him for his poor judgement. This is especially when the Sultan relies too much on Jafar, even though the Sultan himself was easily being manipulated by Jafar, who was actually a dangerous magician that wanted to overthrow the Sultan and rule Agrabah.
Trivia[]
- He is one of the only three fathers in a Disney Princess film to be a Base-Breaking Character, with the other two being King Stefan and King Triton.
- Unlike them, he is the only one of that category to have a daughter who is not a Base-Breaking Character.
