What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- Some fans believe the idea of him being a bit more sympathetic in this version works well, since it makes him easier to root for and have more likability, while also giving him a unique personality as well.
- Many enjoyed him having more interactions with Max in this version, as it develops a more dynamic relationship between the two.
- Fans enjoyed the segment where he goes to house to house stealing all of their Christmas presents and decorations, just like the other previous versions of him.
- The ending where The Grinch redeems himself and attends Cindy Lou's Christmas house party and getting along with everyone is considered heartwarming by fans.
- While some disliked it, others appreciated Benedict Cumberbatch's voice performance of The Grinch.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- The most criticize aspect on this version of the character is that he lacks any of the charm that the previous versions had, which leads to detractors considering him as being the weakest incarnation of the character.
- Many detractors believe the design for this Grinch doesn't suit him well, as it makes him appear too friendly and cuddly, rather than being supposedly intimidating and cunning.
- Detractors criticize that he's hardly a villain at all, more so just a grumpy depressed neighbor having a bad day, whose bad acts (besides stealing Christmas), are very minor compared to what the previous versions pulled off.
- He sometimes decides to show acts of kindness out of nowhere in the middle of the film which misses the point of the character, as he is supposed to do his true kind act after he has a change of heart.
- This becomes especially noticeable when he discovers that Fred the Reindeer has a family, and decides to let him go to be reunited with them, which just goes to show how poorly inconsistent his character is.
- Detractors criticize that his tragic backstory of living in the orphanage not having anyone to spend Christmas with doesn't hold up, as they believe it doesn't give the Grinch a good reason to hate Christmas, along with it feeling unnecessary to give him a tragic backstory at all in the first place.
- A lot of detractors hated his new theme song by Tyler the Creator, as the majority of the lyrics in the song do not correctly match the description of the titular character of this film, as well as it being way too hip-hop.
- While some people might consider Benedict Cumberbatch's voice acting to be spot on, detractors see his acting coming off as quite bizarre and unfitting for this kind of character, especially considering the fact that he often changes his voice tone every now and then, making it sound really inconsistent as a result.
