The End is the overarching antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, serving as the main antagonist of Sonic Frontiers, and its DLC The Final Horizon. It is a sadistic, godlike entity that went around the galaxies and destroyed an indescribable amount of planets, all with no known motivation aside from considering themselves as supreme.
In Japanese, it is voiced by Gara Takashima for its female voice and Hōchū Ōtsuka for its male voice. In English, it is voiced by Cindy Robinson for its female voice and Mike Pollock, who also did the voice for Dr. Eggman, for its male voice.
What Makes It a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About It?[]
- Those who like The End consider it one of the darkest villains in the entire Sonic franchise, thanks in part to the fact that it had committed mass genocide all across the omniverse.
- Additionally, all scenes that involve The End are portrayed very seriously, adding onto people's perception of this.
- A common point of praise for The End is how unique of an idea for a villain it is, a being that see's themselves as the end of the universe itself, or rather a lack of hope personified, that tells others that their lives are meaningless, greatly contrasting with the franchise's titular protagonist, who actively encourages others to live their lives freely.
- Its monologue, where it talks down to both Sonic and Sage about its perpetual existence and how everything it kills is worthless, during the final battle in the base game has been deemed one of the most memorable parts of the series, becoming one of the most quoted lines of any character within the Sonic fanbase.
- It is generally agreed that the final battle with it in the DLC The Final Horizon is one of the best Sonic final bosses of all time due to its atmosphere, the introduction of two new Super Forms for Sonic, and the extremely high stakes involved with the fight, even being able to temporarily take Sonic out of his super form.
- Some people praise The End's design being a moon to resemble the ending of a story like how a sun is the beginning of a story.
What Do People Hate About It?[]
- Those who dislike The End all around consider it a very flat and boring villain, with no real personality or characterization beyond just wanting to destroy everything. Not helping is how there was no real build up to the character until the last island of the game. Even in the DLC it is commonly complained that it still wasn't given any further characterization.
- In Japanese script, The End comes off as oblivious but respectful and well-intentioned extremist cosmic being. That would paint itself as just another generic doomsday villain Sonic fights, unlike the English script that characterized as the absolutely depraved, supremacistic, & manipulative being. It doesn't help that it has killed all the survivors of The Ancients and destroyed countless stars, planets, and lives.
- However some fans actually like this aspect, in which similar to The Lich from Adventure Time, as they are doing this for their own ego despite with no motivation.
- Many people found both phases of its fight in the base game to be rather underwhelming, unlike all of the other bosses, which are deemed some of the best parts of Sonic Frontiers.
- The first phase, where Sonic fights the SUPREME titan is considered underwhelming and rather easy to beat. Not helping this is when hackers found this part of the game had been rushed, as the fight would have included extra attacks like SUPREME using a giant gun.
- The second phase, where Sonic and Sage fight it in space, is also commonly criticized for using a mechanic in the game that had only been used one other time up to this point, fighting The End in a Ikaruga-style shoot-em-up. The insane difficulty of this battle also contributed to this.
- This was eventually fixed in the Final Horizon DLC.
- Some People mock the character's design, being nothing more than a giant purple glowing moon, in contrast to the more complex designs of other villains such as Dark Gaia or even Black Doom.
- On the other hand, Morio Kishimoto had also revealed that this form is only one way it can appear, as its actual appearance is what one perceives death to be, with The End just appearing as a moon due to the moon being associated with death in some myths. Even with this explanation, however, people were still rather unsatisfied with this design choice.
- Some people complained that in DLC The Final Horizon. The player does not get to fight The End and can only fight a powered up Supreme boss when they wanted to fight the End itself.
