Steve is the deuteragonist of the 2025 fantasy action-adventure film A Minecraft Movie, the film adaptation of Mojang's Minecraft video games franchise.
He is a human who was originally born on Earth. As a child, he was drawn to a local mineshaft; however, an elderly miner barred him from entering. When he finally reached adulthood, Steve was able to pursue his lifelong goal of mining unrestricted.
While digging, he discovered a strange cube that unlocked a whole new block-based realm known as the Overworld. Since then, he's moved into a village, and established friendships with the local inhabitants and animals, in additional inventing a variety of items.
Many years later, he encounters a group of four outcasts who discover the Overworld and must defend it from the Piglins, a hostile species who wish to conquer the land for their leader Malgosha.
He was played by Jack Black.

- Many people find Jack Black's performance as Steve hilarious and believe he saves the movie from being a complete disaster.
- His fans love the impromptu song about his lava chicken.
- Fans find his rivalry and friendship with Garrett the Garbage Man genuinely entertaining.
- Many of his line deliveries have become huge memes online, largely due to Jack Black's over-the-top mannerisms, such as "THIS is a crafting table!" "Flint & Steel!" and most notably "Chicken Jockey!" These moments also sparked a trend where people would watch the movie in theaters just to cheer/clap whenever a quote from the trailers was spoken.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Many of his detractors (specifically fans of Minecraft) believe Jack Black was miscast as Steve, who in the original game, is meant to be a surrogate for the player, AKA a blank slate with no personality.
- Some people argue that Steve doesn't have much of a character, and is just Jack Black playing himself.
- His whole shtick of constantly naming items/elements from the game can get pretty annoying, and some people take it as the movie thinking the audience is too stupid to recognize something without Steve saying it.
- There are people who don't find his performance or lines funny at all.

- When the first teaser for the movie released, it was universally hated, especially Jack Black's casting. Therefore, many assumed that Steve would end up being a Scrappy. However, thanks to memes and audiences' ironic enjoyment of the film, his iteration of the character managed to culminate a genuine fanbase.
