The Iron Throne is mine. By right. All those who deny that are my foes.
~ Stannis claiming his right to the Iron Throne.

Lord Stannis Baratheon, disputably King Stannis I Baratheon, is one of the tritagonists of the HBO show Game of Thrones, the adaptation to the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. He is the brother of King Robert I Baratheon. When he heard his brother died, and that his heir, Joffrey, wasn't his biological son but the incestuous child of Cersei and Jaime Lannister, Stannis vowed to go to war against the Lannisters.

He was portrayed by Stephen Dillane.

What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Him?[]

  • He's a geniune extremist, whose claim to the Iron Throne is righteous since he's Robert's brother while Joffrey isn't even his real son, which caused a lot of people to side with Stannis during the War of The Five Kings.
  • He's a skilled general, having earned a reputation for being a charismatic and ruthless tactician, who survived the long and painful siege of Storm's End during Robert's Rebellion, nearly took King's Landing by force, and defeated Mance Rayder's army almost instantly.
  • He has many badass moments and iconic lines, such as "A good act does not wash the bad, nor a bad the good", and is also shown to be a great fighter and leader durin the siege of King's Landing.
  • Despite being merciless toward his enemies he's also shown to be honorable and honest, such as when he gives Renly a chance to join him and decides to have Melisandre kill him only after his brother clearly refused, rewarded Davos for his loyalty despite his past crimes and only had his fingers cut off, and also respected Jon Snow's position as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch and approved his decisions. People also liked his relationship with his daughter, at least before he killed her.
  • His blunt and sharp personnality is also the reason many people like his badass side, and is also behind many memes within the Game of Thrones community.
  • While he did a lot of horrible things, such as killing his brother and sacrificing his daughter, these moments were meant to humanize him and make him more complex, since most of his bad deeds have understandable motives behind it.
  • Before Season 5 of the show, Stannis had alone gathered a large group of fans, who nicknamed him "The Mannis" and made a series of memes around him around the Internet, showing the character's popularity and how quick fans were compelled by him.

What Do People Hate About Him?[]

  • While killing Renly was a necessary evil and also made sense to his character, burning his own daughter to the stake, however, wasn't to the eyes of many people. First off, Stannis (and to a larger extent Melisandre) was massively hated for doing such an unforgivable act, since he was murdering his only heir and Shireen was a beloved side character. Some also say it was out-of-character for him to do such a thing, since it would make no sense for a pragmatic man like Stannis to kill his kin under Melisandre's influence, which just turns him into a delusional and dependant fanatic, which caused a lot of people to stop liking him.
    • His defeat at Ramsay's hands is also laughable: after Shireen's death, his wife commits suicide, all of the horses were stolen, and litteraly most of his troops (including Melisandre herself) ran away, leaving Stannis to be ultimately bested by Ramsay's infamous "twenty good men". His death was also underwhelming since we don't get to see Brienne beheading him, leading fans to believe he actually survived. People feel like Stannis was completely ruined in Season 5 and it's for those reasons so many turned against him.
    • Book readers also despise the show version of Stannis, because most of his good deeds in the books were completely removed and, despite being a morally-grey character, Stannis is often portrayed in a negative light in the show and received additional bad deeds he never committed in the books, as well as being portrayed as less competent and being Melisandre's puppet, both of which were never the case in the novels.

Trivia[]

  • Stannis is often regarded to be one of the very first Game of Thrones characters to have been derailed, even long before Season 8 of the show. His book counterpart, on the other hand, is widely loved, and does not count.
