Stanford Leonard Smith, also better known as Stan Smith, is the main protagonist of the adult cartoon series, American Dad. As father of the Smith household, he is Francine's husband, father of Steve and Hayley Smith, and a C.I.A. official. While usually a protagonist, he also has plenty of antagonistic roles that qualifies him as a villainous protagonist.
He is voiced by series creator, Seth MacFarlene, who also voices Peter Griffin, Brian Griffin, and Glenn Quagmire in Family Guy.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- He is considered to be a type of comedic character, with amount of jokes he made that helps the television standards run smoothly.
- As shown in the early series, he cared and is willing to help members of his family and those around him, especially when he did not abuse Hayley and protecting his country he loves.
- He has a tragic past, as proven when he is left abandoned by his father as a young lad.
- He can still act heroic at times, even in the new series, such as going on dangerous C.I.A missions to protect his country he loves and did whatever he can to help those around him, including members of his family.
- Whenever he makes many mistakes, he does show regret and tries his best to make up for his misdeeds in several occasions, specifically the early series.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- He infamously suffered very bad character derailment and flanderization in the TBS series, as proven when he went from being a somewhat absent-minded, yet supporting, patriarch and deputy official with a heart of gold to being more of an abusive, idiotic, and corrupt manchild who commits loads of crimes and puts everyone in jeopardy, including members of his family, which most fans can view him as a full blown antagonist or a villain protagonist.
- Not only that, he has become more of a horrible husband to Francine, such as putting her in a mental institution just because he once again forgot their anniversary, up to the point where she nearly got killed because of his stupidity.
- Furthermore, it also causes his popularity to decline as well, due to the negative character derailment.
- He is shown to be quite clumsy and incompetent, such as proclaiming that he only married Francine for her looks and screwing up several CIA experiments.
- He killed or assaulted way too many people that gets in his way, didn't even care about what he did, doesn’t get punished for his actions in most occasions, and when he supposedly learns his lessons in several occasions, he always forgets his confession of his misdeeds.
- He's also an animal abuser such as the time that he murdered a deer.
- He happens to be a hypocrite, like the time when he told Hayley to stop texting while driving, yet he does the same as well.
- Almost most of his actions in the series are considered unforgivable regarding himself in spite of the satirical nature of the work, such as putting his family in poverty, trying to destroy Brett’s life because he doesn’t believe in God, ordering the CIA to create a huge storm that killed many people, kidnapping his mother’s dates because of his obsession with her, and much more of his despicable actions.
- He is often prone to having a violent temper and for having too much violent outbursts when things get in his way, such as the time when he blatantly locked up the whole neighborhood (including Bob and Linda Memari) in a detention camp after berating Bob and Linda Memari as terrorists, threatening to kill anyone he encounters, and when he assaulted a bystander during Steve’s bowling.
