Squidward J. Q. Tentacles, simply known as Squidward, is the tritagonist of the 1999 SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. He is an arrogant octopus who is neighbors with SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star, and the cashier at The Krusty Krab.
He is voiced by Rodger Bumpass.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- People can see him as one of the most relatable characters in the SpongeBob franchise, considering he constantly gets pestered by SpongeBob, Patrick and (to some level) Mr. Krabs, and constantly gets into bad luck. He also suffered from flanderization less than the other main characters, who gradually became more mean-spirited over time.
- He is more understandable by adult fans of the show, relating to his intelligence and cynicism as they get older more than SpongeBob's childishness, and seeing him as one of the most relatable characters in the show given how at times the others treat him poorly and act like either idiots or mean-spirited jerks.
- Despite them annoying him most of the time, Squidward does still care for SpongeBob and Patrick at times, having many moments where he helps them or genuinely appreciates them.
- Squidward is noticeably one of the most well-known tritagonists in fictional history, and has been a subject to several internet memes and his clarinet skills can be interesting to listen to.
- He has many satisfying moments throughout the show, like when he slams the pizza into the rude customer's face in "Pizza Delivery", succeeding in his performance in "Band Geeks" and having his destroyed house win over Squilliam despite all of his misfortunes in "House Fancy".
- There are times where he has "Take That, Scrappy" towards the other characters who are disliked for their flanderization, such as in "Rule of Dumb" where he calls out Patrick for being a terrible king.
- His performance by Rodger Bumpass sounds amazing for his personality for the most part.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
“ | Squidward: That is the stupidest dance move I've ever seen! SpongeBob: Who put you on the planet?!? Ugh! |

~ Squidward insulting SpongeBob in one of his more infamous roles, "I ❤️ Dancing". |
- He is extremely abusive towards SpongeBob and Patrick, as he often verbally insults them, yells at them, calls them names, lashes out at them, bosses them around, and shows no respect to them. While it's true that SpongeBob and Patrick are annoying, that's still no excuse and some die-hard fans of the SpongeBob character don't like or even downright hate Squidward for this (if not that many). And even when he's not being mean to SpongeBob, he is at best being cold to him and at worst being uncaring to him, even wanting him dead at times.
- Ironically, there are others who strongly dislike the horrible mistreatment Squidward faces in modern SpongeBob. Most of the time, he gets punished for little to no reason at all. It got to that point where Squidward is scared of him since SpongeBob continues to harass him and never leaving him alone.
- While he was always a rude and unlucky jerk in the series, his jerkiness was ramped up in the later seasons and his unlucky status combined with him being the butt of the other characters jokes can get somewhat repetitive and annoying.
- While his flanderization isn't as extreme as the other characters', he did have episodes which are infamous due to him being at his worst, such as "Little Yellow Book" and "Sportz?"
- His performance by Rodger Bumpass, while funny and amazing as mentioned above, can also sound annoying at times, especially now that he screams much more often than before.
