Sonic the Hedgehog is the titular protagonist of the 1993 British comic series Sonic the Comic. Like most versions of the character, he is a blue hedgehog who uses his enhanced speed to fight a villain named Dr. Robotnik.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- His jerkish attitude is liked by fans of the comic, giving extra appeal to an otherwise one-dimensional character at the time. While he can be mean-spirited, his attitude is considered to be understandable due to having lots of stress and high expectations being put on him and using his insults to cope, not to mention having multiple occasions where he can be sincerely nice beneath his rough exterior.
- His jokes and snark can be considered to be funny, especially for British audiences where such humour is common in their culture.
- Though he is often rude to his friends, he does still care about them. He is also given an appropriate amount of retribution as his friends call him out if he goes too far with his insults.
- He is a three-dimensional character who has flaws and internal conflicts, as even when he insulted Porker Lewis for quitting the Freedom Fighters (while making him cry) he later apologized to him, with writer Nigel Kitching explaining that Sonic insulted Porker because he wanted him to stay but found it hard to express his true feelings because of his attitude, and did not mean what he said.
- He received positive character development after Johnny Lightfoot's death, where he was so remorseful over it (as he never expected any of his allies to actually die) that he blamed it on himself and temporarily quit the Freedom Fighters, and by the time he returned he became less of a jerk and swore to protect his friends from harm so they wouldn't die like Johnny did.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- He is mainly hated for being a huge jerk (more than any other incarnation of Sonic), which can be unlikable at times shown when he insults his friends to the point where he ends up making them cry or get angry at him.
- Some fans more familiar to the modern incarnations of Sonic, where he is portrayed as being more nice and selfless towards his friends, feel that this version's crueller attitude to be jarring in comparison.
- Many unfamiliar with the comic often see Sonic's jerkish moments out of context and believe him to be a one-note bully, though fans of the work disprove this.
- With most of the characters being portrayed as being bigger jerks than most adaptations (with Sonic's portrayal being most notable), readers may consider the comic's story to be too mean-spirited.
- His characterization is criticized by American fans, who at the time preferred heroes with flaws but remain likeable, as he was written with British values (such as mean-spirited comedy and making British jokes that get lost in translation).
