What Makes Her a Base-Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Her?[]
- Supporters find that she can be charming, cunning or intelligent at times.
- She has extremely valid reasons for her nosy or controlling behavior towards Walt, as he constantly lies and manipulates her and ultimately endangers everyone close to them. Her primary motivation is to protect the livelihood of her family.
- She tries numerous times to get Walt to leave the drug trade at any opportunity possible.
- She is extremely tragic and primarily a villain by proxy, leading many viewers to see her as a sympathetic and manipulated figure.
- She has some memorable or comedic moments in the series, such as her first interaction with Jesse Pinkman.
- Many praise Anna Gunn's emotional performance as Skyler, such as her tearful breakdown in "Ozymandias" when Walt took Holly from her, along with her finally standing up to him moments prior.
What Do People Hate About Her?[]
- Even prior to his criminal activity, she was apathetic to Walter's misfortunes in life and more times than not kept her own interests in mind rather than her family's.
- Detractors find her to be a snobbish and controlling woman who tends to think more about herself than others and always wants things done her way, primarily with how she treats Walt, Marie, and Hank.
- She committed adultery with Ted Beneke just to spite Walt, taking satisfaction in seeing it upset him. Detractors find that in spite of Walt's drug-dealing, lies and refusal to respect Skyler's boundaries, this is not excusable or admirable.
- The infamous "Happy Birthday" scene is also widely regarded as one of the most awkward or hard-to-watch moments in the series.
- She's hypocritical, as she calls Walt out for his drug-dealing activities and manipulation, but commits or is complicit in criminal or conniving activities throughout the series. She also takes advantage of the money that Walt had earned, and is a huge factor as to why his operation was so powerful. Detractors find that this dilutes the supposed moral high ground she is meant to represent over Walt.
- Some detractors dislike her character simply because she is boring in comparison to the high-stakes and dramatic storylines pertaining to the criminal characters, thereby taking away from the appeal of the series.
- Also detractors who watch the show for the psychopathic badass drug kingpin fantasy and Evil is Cool stuff throughout the show are put off by Skyler and dislike her because she is a constant reality check that kills the vibe.
