Sir Ector, also known as Lord Ector or just Ector for short, is an anti heroic supporting character in Disney's 18th full-length animated feature, The Sword in the Stone. As lord of his castle, he is Sir Kay's father and Arthur's foster father.
He was voiced by the late Sebastian Cabot.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- Even though he treats Arthur like a servant, he does have moments where he does care for him, further showing that he isn't a bad person. Here are reasons why.
- He got worried about Arthur being lost in the woods and scolded Kay for letting this happen.
- When Hobbs became sick, Ector reinstated Arthur as Kay's squire and let him go to London.
- After placing the sword back in an anvil, he commanded Arthur to test the miracle of pulling the sword out in front of everyone.
- He apologized to Arthur for his mistreatment towards him.
- Several fans find his friendship with Sir Pellinore interesting as they have polar opposite personalities, also showing that Ector is still a good person.
- He has plenty of comedic moments that some people may consider him another comic relief in the movie like Merlin and Archimedes, such as the part where he and Kay try unsuccessfully to undo Merlin's magic in the kitchen and when he refers to Merlin as "Marvin" in which some may consider this running gag hilarious.
- Furthermore, his "Educated owl?!" line can be quite funny and jolly to people, going to show how funny he can be when he’s not strict.
- Sebastian Cabot's over-the-top performance was just right for the character regarding his jolly, funny, and strict traits which is what led to Cabot voicing Bagheera in The Jungle Book.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Other people don't like him for being too jerkish, strict and cruel to Merlin and Arthur. As a result, some may consider him an antagonist of the film, due to him trying to have Merlin sent away from fiddling with his crucial schedule and when he refuses to listen to Arthur telling the truth and accept criticism.
- Him constantly piling more demerits on Arthur, who is only trying to tell the truth, can be quite annoying to some detractors who have a hard time with Ector’s character.
Trivia[]
- He is one of only four parents from a Disney animated film released in the Silver Age to be a Base-Breaking Character with the others being George Darling, King Stefan and Queen Leah.
- On top of that, he is the only one form that category to come from a Disney film that was released in the 1960’s.
