“ | But it's becoming increasingly obvious. I can deny it no longer!... I am small. | „ |
~ Plankton's most famous quote. |
Sheldon J. Plankton, better known only with his surname Plankton, is a major character of the Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, serving most of the time as the main antagonist of the whole series, but sometimes he’s an anti-hero and teams up with the heroes in some occasions.
He’s the villainous and envious owner of the unsuccessful Chum Bucket and most of his plans include the goal to steal the Krabby Patty formula away from his surpassing competitors of the Krusty Krab. Since they estranged themselves in their childhood, he’s the arch-nemesis of the owner of the Krusty Krab Eugene H. Krabs and nowadays also of Eugenes best employee SpongeBob SquarePants.
He is voiced by Doug Lawrance.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
“ | Here you go, Krabs. | „ |
~ Plankton gives the formula back to Mr. Krabs in the end of the second SpongeBob Movie. |
- He’s seen as not only the most iconic villain in Nickelodeon history, but also one of the most memorable villains in media history, especially due to his appearance. Normally you have a main antagonist who is physically superior against the protagonists, but this time, the main antagonist is the smallest character of the whole series.
- Nonetheless, he uses his intelligence to still be a really big threat to the protagonists, having complicated plans, machinery or going as far as possible. This stubbornness and the will making him a villain to fear.
- He uses everything available to give himself the best chances to achieving his plans. When you look at the resources the protagonists have, who have normally much more resources and manpower, this actually makes him a sympathetic underdog for many viewers.
- Especially for many viewers due to Krabs’ greedy and villainous moments, many even root for Plankton in that matter.
- Just like Mr. Krabs, he also has plenty of entertaining scenes and many memes, especially in the first three seasons, such as his College-Rants or his most famous quote about his size.
- He almost always gets his comeuppance for his evil deeds, mostly in a very amusing way.
- Mr. Lawrence gave him a memorable voice performance, making Plankton probably his most famous role.
- In fact, it’s his work that made Plankton a main character in the first place, as he actually should only have an appearance in the very first episode where he was the main antagonist: “Plankton!”. Stephen Hillenburg didn’t know what to do with this character after this episode, but Mr. Lawrence liked him so much and had many ideas with the character.
- He has some really good traits, when he (most of the time) truly loves his computer wife Karen, his son Chip, his pet amoeba Spot.
- He’s actually that popular that many fanfiction creators pictures him in a very good light, making him, ironically the main antagonist of the series, the character with the most pages on the Pure Good Wiki, having two: His version of the Bikini Bottom Horror and from THE SECRET FORMULA.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
“ | Plankton: All right, it's true! I tricked you to get the Krabby Patty! But then you showed me friendship! And now I realize... that's all I ever really wanted. Spongebob: Really?! |

~ Plankton and SpongeBob in F.U.N. where Plankton reveals his façade. |
- Like with most of the main cast, Plankton has ups and downs for being inconsistently portrayed.
- His whole motivation behind his villainy is often played down and he openly clamed that being evil makes fun, making him do his acts only for the evulz. Most people believe that he’s actually redeemable, because he has a lot of redeeming qualities and pet the dog moments. Many people criticize that many episodes simply throw those depths away from the character, making him a very flat antagonist.
- The producers seemingly never have in mind to ever redeem him, as it’s always revealed that he played an act. Making actually really popular scenes, e.g. where Mr. Krabs really wanted to apologize for things from the past and Plankton seems to do it either way, wasting so much potential and also makes them ridiculous.
- His evilness level is also painfully inconsistent. If the series would’ve ended after the first movie, he would be Near Pure Evil, especially after the said movie itself, where he was portrayed as a heartless psychopath. In other episodes he’s portrayed as a broken loser with no intention of being evil but was simply pushed by his wife Karen.
- While Plankton is generally intelligent, his intelligence is sometimes extremely questionable in certain instances. On the one hand, he’s next to Sandy Cheeks; the most intelligent scientist of the series, having really good plans, big machinery and is able to manipulate the main characters but on the other side he has tons of slapstick comical defeats like losing only in Imitation Krabs for his idea to install a coin-operated self-destruct in his Robot Krabs suit or in It’s a SpongeBob Christmas write on the key of his ToyBob robot “If found, please return to the Chum Bucket”.
- He’s mostly seen by how he despises every person without any exception, but he’s also terribly abusive towards his wife, even leaving her to die in extremely cold weather, only for him stealing the formula in that time. Also all the times where he manipulates somebody to work for him, he’s a terrible boss even if that behaviour works against him in the end.
- Even his size is inconsistent. He began in the first episodes as so small, that he’s only visible with a magnifying glass but later he was much larger.
- His whole motivation is seen as ridiculous over the last 25 years. With his potential he could easily make another business or at least make another recipe, which isn’t made from legitimate fish waste, which made the fish folk seem cannibalistic.
- He is so obsessed due to his envy with the formula that it is easily comparable to Mr. Krabs’ greed.
Trivia[]
- One Coarse Meal was so hated, hurts the reputation by Mr. Krabs even until today and even the voice actor Clancy Brown felt uncomfortable voicing Mr. Krabs in that episode, especially for the treatment towards Plankton. Ironically, that episode was actually written and planned for the most part by the voice actor of Plankton himself, Mr. Lawrance.
