Seraphine, also known as the Starry-Eyed Songstress, is a heroic playable champion from League of Legends.

A magicborn girl with the ability to hear emotions and souls, she was given a hextech device to suppress the overwhelming sensations of her hearing. With the crystal encouraging her to pursue the career of a performer, she became a popular idol across both Piltover and Zaun, with the intention to unite both using her songs.

She is voiced by Michele Panu.

What Makes Her a Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Her?[]

  • Her idol singer theme has attracted many idol and K-pop fans to the League of Legends community.
  • She was marketed through her own Twitter account "seradotwav" representing her K/DA counterpart, which allowed fans to connect with her as an inspiring and relatable figure.
  • Her artistic depictions in Legends of Runeterra alleviated most criticisms towards her design by showing her wearing traditional Piltovan clothes, making her fit into the setting more.

What Do People Hate About Her?[]

  • Her character is seen as a cheap marketing tactic for K/DA as her K/DA depiction received more development than her story in the canonical League of Legends lore, with many believing she was forced into the setting due to how her design felt out of place within Runeterra's fantasy thematics.
  • Critics claim that her K/DA Twitter account was a marketing tactic designed to pander to idol fans and prioritizing K/DA's success over the main game. The account has also been criticized for promoting parasocial relationships with fans, trying to get them to empathize with her feelings of depression and angst even though she's ultimately a fictional character in the end.
  • She is criticised for being a copy of Sona, due to them both being support champions with a magical music theme.
  • Her positive character is criticized for being boring, being seen as a "Mary Sue" written with no conflicts to make her interesting.
  • Her lore during her launch was criticized due to showing awareness of the true nature of hextech crystals, where they come from mining operations ripping the crystals from the brackern which nearly drove them to extinction. Despite Seraphine not fully understanding the truth behind the brackern's suffering in the lore, a few of her in-game quotes portrayed her as being aware of their situation but being complicit (like claiming that the brackern fueled Piltover and she would sing their elegy, telling Caitlyn that her gun "likes" her and telling the brackern champion Skarner that she misses his kind too and asks him if he wants to hear their song). This caused detractors to view her as a hypocrite willing to exploit a race's suffering despite claiming to preach for peace, resulting in Seraphine's story being rewritten to portray her as being oblivious to the truth, and all of her voicelines involving the brackern getting removed from the game.

Trivia[]

  • The backlash Seraphine's story received over her involvement with the brackern caused Skarner, who was a mostly forgotten champion prior, to have his popularity increase significantly due to their sympathy towards Seraphine's exploitation of his kind, to the point it contributed to him winning a poll which resulted in him being reworked.
