Wanda Maximoff, better known as the Scarlet Witch, is a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She was a Sokovian native alongside her brother Pietro Maximoff, who became driven by revenge against Tony Stark after his weapons were used in a bombing that accidentally killed her parents. Ultimately, Wanda and Pietro abandoned their grudge to prevent Ultron from destroying all of humanity. Since then, she had gradually shifted into a kind-hearted, yet occasionally ruthless Avenger.
However, after Vision's death and the defeat of Thanos, Wanda seized control of the town of Westview to create her own perfect reality, as a way of coping with her past traumas and depression, but in doing so, also inadvertently traps the town's inhabitants, not letting them escape her idea of a perfect world. Realizing the psychological harm and damage she had done to others, she decided to let her simulacrum family go and put herself in exile.
When she began to study the Darkhold to refine her powers, however, she became corrupted by its dark magic and fell under the delusion that she would find her children in another universe. Learning of America Chavez and her ability to travel across the multiverse, she started a rampage in pursuit of power, in order to find her children and the idyllic life she once had, leading her to come in conflict with her former friend, Doctor Strange, as well as the Masters of the Mystic Arts.
She was portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen. Her younger self was portrayed by Michaela Russell.
What Makes Her a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Her?[]
- She had a backstory that is considered to be very developed and tragic.
- Due to this tragic backstory and her being extremely broken over her past, some fans are capable of forgiving her for her actions.
- Her powers are seen by fans as incredible from start to finish.
- Wanda is considered as one of the most likable characters in Phase 3 because of her large fanbase despite just serving as a supporting character in them.
- She comes off as really funny in a few scenes.
- Fans think her romantic scenes with Vision, as well as her sibling relationship with Pietro, are cute.
- She was the one who killed Vision to prevent Thanos from getting the last stone, only to no avail, which is seen as a really powerful scene.
- Her lashing out at 2014 Thanos for taking everything away from her was also nothing more than a badass moment of hers.
- Even if she was meant to be the main antagonist of Multiverse of Madness, fans sided with and cheered for her for her embodiment of Evil is Cool, slaughtering the Illuminati for their smug self-righteousness, and the fact that she suffers tragedy after tragedy.
What Do People Hate About Her?[]
- Some critize her fighting style and powers as being too close to psonic mutants like Jean Grey than a soccer she was supposed to be.
- Comics fans don't like the fact that she's not a mutant and not relate to Magneto. Some also dislike the fact that they cast Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron-Taylor Johnson, which both are literally Caucasian actors instead of a more appropriate Romani-Jewish actors to portray her and her brother. Although to be fair, both of them was draw to have a light-skin for majority of the comics history. (They not even jewish anymore after Magneto retcon to not be their real father in comics.)
- Some argue she became a little too overpowered, being as strong as someone like Captain Marvel or Thor. But since she's more complex and her obtain more powers has story setup, she is not Mary Sue.
- She is argued to be unfairly defended in WandaVision by Monica Rambaeu about saying she sacrificed her familty to destroy her hex, when it's her own fault she is the one that created her children that will inevitably cease to exist along with the Hex. Although, this scene could also be interpreted as Wanda sacrifice real Vision in Infinity War.
- Some fans may also view her as hypocritical because in the start of WandaVision, she was obsessed with reviving Vision, but during the whole movie of Multiverse of Madness, her care shifted to her kids and Vision was not even mentioned once. (Although this can be argued that she already move on from Vision but not her kids.)
- A few think her plan of getting her kids back in Multiverse of Madness by willingly endangering any universe to get her way is a rehash of Kingpin from the Spider-Verse movies’ motives.
- Overall, in Multiverse of Madness, fans believed that she replaced the main character of the movie to the point where Doctor Strange was shifted into a side-character; even claiming that Nightmare or Shuma-Gorath would be better options for the film's main antagonist.
- Her action in Multiverse of Madness are seen by some as ignoring all of her character development in the end of WandaVision that she was able to letting go of Vision and her kids.
- Due to Wanda's villainous role in Multiverse of Madness, some fans believe the MCU made a similar mistake as Marvel Comics had done with the House of M storyline; accusing the film’s writers of using Wanda as a plot device in a similar fashion as when her comics counterpart de-powered the mutant population in House of M.
- Funily enough, comic’s Wanda was redeemed in The Trial of Magneto, just for her MCU counterpart to doubling down in villainy year later.
- Due to recent reveal that Tommy and Billy souls still exist and alive in main MCU/Earth-199999 and existence of her alternate counterpart, which can open portals to other universes, in What If...?, this make her actions in Multiverse of Madness even more pointless. She commit mass murder, attempt child murders, attempt abduct her alternate sons, and finally commit suicide for nothing.
