“ | Riddle me this! | „ |
~ Riddler's catchphrase |
Edward Nashton, better known as Edward Nygma or The Riddler and previously known as Enigma is a major antagonist in the Batman: Arkham franchise.
He is one of Gotham City's most professional criminals who is obsessed of proving to the world that he is smarter than everyone else, including Batman. He tasks the Caped Crusader to optionally find his personal trophies and solve certain riddles in a series of challenging puzzles.
He was voiced by Wally Wingert.
What Makes Him A Base-Breaking Character?[]
Why Do People Like (To Hate) Him?[]
- He is by far the funniest and most entertaining villains in the franchise, and a lot of people are pleased with the running joke of him trying to outsmart Batman by sending him a series of challenges, and him constantly taunting him when he fails and raging when he succeeds and calls him a cheater.
- Wally Wingert does a great and memorable performance as the Riddler.
- His attitude is very in-character for the Riddler and seems a loyal portrayal of him in the DC Comics.
- Though he is more sadistic, egotistical, evil, and as well as more childish than his comic book counterpart.
- While his challenges become tedious and repetitive in Arkham Knight, they are fun to do in the other games, especially Arkham City where Batman is rewarded a hostage every time he solves a series of riddles.
- The puzzle room sequences in Arkham City and Arkham Knight are very creepy, with it having a lot of Saw-vibes, especially with the Riddler appearing on a projected image on the wall while giving instructions similar to Jigsaw, with both having catchphrases ("I want to play a game" for Jigsaw and "Riddle me this" for Riddler).
- It's very satisfying to defeat him, as he constantly brags about how Batman is an idiot and a cheater, and it's also kind of funny to beat the hell out of him during his boss fights in both Arkham City and Arkham Knight.
Why Do People Dislike Him?[]
- His detractors think he was okay as just a bonus mission in Arkham Asylum, and that he takes way too much space in the other games and is constantly overused, to the point that some people are actually pissed with the running gag of him always trying to outsmart Batman.
- While he has a lot of funny lines, they can be also very annoying if you constantly fail.
- While the challenges were "okay" in the first three games, it becomes particularly tedious and repetitive in Arkham Knight, with solving each riddle and unlocking each trophy becoming really difficult even by the series' standards, and Riddler taunting the player all the time doesn't help either. What makes it even more annoying is that it's now necessary to complete his side mission in order to get the true ending of the Knightfall Protocol.
- Many were disappointed with his return in the 2024 video game sequel to Arkham Knight known as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. He managed to evade punishment yet again, and many think that it's pointless for him to be riddling Task Force X, a group of villains who aren't really known for their intelligence. Not only that, but his challenges are utterly pathetic and disappointing in comparison to the previous four games. While the other games had 200-440 trophies, this game only had at least 40.
Trivia[]
- He is the only Base-Breaking character in the franchise, although the Arkham Knight has a lot of chances to count too.
- He, alongside his Burton/Schumacherverse counterpart, are the only versions of the Riddler to be Base-Breaking characters.
