Richard Daniel Sanchez is the titular main protagonist of the Adult Swim dark comedy series Rick and Morty. He is a nihilistic and cynical scientist from a dimension C-137. After his family was killed by Rick Prime, he traveled to the Prime dimension and adopted Prime's family and entire life.
He was voiced by the show’s co-creator Justin Roiland in seasons 1 through six and Ian Cardoni in season 7 and onward.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- His performances by both Justin Roiland and Ian Cardoni have been praised.
- Fans believe he has a lot of hilarious and at times memable quotes.
- One of the most famous being the "Pickle Rick" meme.
- Fans find his various sci-fi weaponry badass.
- Fans find his relationship with his family to be wholesome at times.
- While it doesn't justify anything he's done, fans sympathize with his backstory of having his family murdered by Rick Prime, which explains much of his self-destructive tendencies and nihilism.
- Fans think he has had numerous brutal and well-choreographed fight scenes.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Detractors find him to be a massive jerk to the point where the entire show becomes unbearable.
- While it is seen as funny by some fans, some detractors feel the "Pickle Rick" meme is annoying and has overstayed its welcome.
- Some detractors think his humor goes too far at times, such as his numerous references to Adolf Hitler.
- Detractors feel his meta humor is overbearing.
- Making him the most intelligent person in the universe (including infinite versions of it) means that he can easily come off as a Gary-Stu.
- Furthermore, it's bound to kill any tension in the series, as he's now expected to win in any situation without much effort. If it indeed happens, the story has no stakes, and when it doesn't happen, his characterization as the most intelligent person who's crazy-prepared with all kinds of weaponry at hand fails.
- His nihilism. While some episodes manage to portray it as a deep issue, many just treat it as a source of his meta jokes about fans who care about the lore of the show. As such, many fans feel like it's hard to get invested in the series where not only do characters often don't care about anything, but the writers also mock you for caring.
