OBJECTION!!
~ Wright's catchphrase

Phoenix Wright (Japanese, Ryuuichi Naruhodo) is the main protagonist of the Ace Attorney franchise. He is a defense attorney that protects his clients in murder cases that range from simple to complex, with him often going through many stressful trials before he can eventually uncover the truth and get the right person arrested.

He was voiced by Takayuki Kondo, Shu Takumi, Kosuke Torumi, Hiroki Narimiya and Yuki Kaji in the Japanese version, and Ben Judd, Sam Riegel, Trevor White, Zach LeBlanc and Eric Vale in the English version.

What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Him?[]

  • Many fans consider him as the series best protagonist due to his combination of funny dialogue, intelligent moments, good character interactions with Edgeworth, Gumshoe and Maya, as well as some other minor characters and having his own share of cool moments.
  • Fans enjoy it when he and Edgeworth go against each other or work with each other in court due to them working well each other and often creating some of the best moments in the series such as the two of them defeating Damon Gant through their combined power or pulling off the miracle in Farewell, My Turnabout to save Maya and defeat Matt Engarde.
  • Some fans enjoyed his characterisation in Apollo Justice, thinking that the idea to turn Phoenix into a chessmaster who has everything under control and is one step ahead of his opponents as a good way of showing how much he had grown since the first game, plus finding him more interesting then how he was characterized in the original trilogy.
  • Fans enjoyed him returning to his old defense attorney self in Dual Destinies after being disbarred in Apollo Justice and getting the chance to play as him again.

What Do People Hate About Him?[]

  • Some fans dislike how he tends to overshadow other characters when they are supposed to have the spotlight, an example being when Apollo Justice was less about Apollo and more about Phoenix despite Apollo being the playable character and having his name in the title, and another example being when he overshadowed Athena in Dual Destinies when the game was meant to be primarily about her and Simon Blackquill.
  • Fans dislike his character regression after Apollo Justice, believing it to be a cop-out by CAPCOM after he was poorly received in Apollo Justice and instead of keeping his more developed self at the end of Trials & Tribulations, opted for the more easily flustered and incompetent version of Phoenix from the first two games.
  • Fans believed that him getting so easily manipulated into presenting the forged diary page to be a huge moment of character assassination after all he had managed to achieve at that point.
  • Some fans believe he has overstayed his welcome in the series and should have had his arc end at Trials & Tribulations, becoming a mentor character for Apollo and Athena at best rather then becoming a playable character. The fact he had to have his character regressed further proves this point.
