Orbot is a recurring character and supporting antagonist in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He is one of Dr. Eggman's robotic assistants, first introduced in Sonic Unleashed. He is partners with Cubot.

In the games, he is voiced by Mitsuo Iwata in Japanese and Kirk Thornton in English.

What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Him?[]

  • He served a nice purpose upon his introduction, being a sassy sidekick that Eggman could talk to during his cutscenes and providing some funny dialogues.
  • There was an interesting topic of discussion on whether the version of him seen in Unleashed, known as SA-55 back then, was really the same Orbot seen in later games, though it's commonly agreed that this was the intention and the character simply evolved, making him popular among fans of Unleashed for being the only character introduced in the game to become a series regular.
  • His relationship with Cubot is compelling to say the least, having some legitimately funny moments that don't harm the plot. The two robots proved to be one of the more memorable additions to the Eggman Empire.
  • He is a classic example of a Punch Clock villain, which was relatively new for the franchise. This is due to his sassy attitude towards his creator and the fact that he is a relunctant accomplice to Eggman's schemes who does not follow him blindly like a mindless robot.
  • Orbot and Cubot were both given ascended roles in Sonic Boom for some episodes of the TV series, where their fans and even detractors would agree they fit well thanks to the sitcom atmosphere of the show allowing them to blend more naturally.

What Do People Hate About Him?[]

  • For one, he and Cubot are seen by many fans as a representation of the many writing issues with the comedy and excess of jokes in the Pontac and Graff era of Sonic storylines, although he has it easier than Cubot due to his prototype being introduced in Unleashed, which still has a relatively good fan reception in terms of story.
  • He lost some of his initial charm due to having less moments of talking back to Eggman and having less presence in the story. It doesn't help that he has to share screentime with Cubot most of the time.
  • He was overshadowed by other creations and allies of Dr. Eggman across all media such as Sage, Dr Starline, Belle, Metal Sonic and even the fan favorite Ensemble Dark Horse that is Agent Stone.
  • His absence and diminished role in recent stories such as Sonic Frontiers was treated as a good thing by some fans as it darkens the story and helps shift it into a more serious tone from Dr. Eggman's perspective.
