Obito Uchiha is one of the two main antagonists of Naruto (alongside Madara Uchiha).
He is the true leader of the Akatsuki and Naruto Uzumaki’s archenemy, as well as Kakashi Hatake’s best friend and rival. Despite appearing late in the story, he secretly orchestrated much of the conflict. He’s fallen hero and ninja from Konohagakure.
He adopted Madara Uchiha’s, even impersonating him. He then started the Fourth Shinobi World War to obtain the Ten-Tails’ power but ultimately redeemed himself through sacrifice.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- A lot of fans find him extremely cool thanks to his design, powers (especially Kamui), badass lines, and voice, which all give him an extremely badass presence that few characters were able to achieve.
- Him being a competent mastermind and manipulator significantly enhanced these viewpoints.
- Most fans found him acting as the goofy Akatsuki member, Tobi very funny, especially his interactions with Deidara, or how he suddenly changed from his Tobi voice to Madara voice.
- Some fans were able to sympathize and relate to him, enjoying the fact that he’s ruthless, while still remaining an extremist at heart, with some people saying that his tragedy was appropriate to how he would turned out in the end.
- Obito’s backstory is genuinely tragic, him turning cold-hearted wasn’t just because of Rin, but rather because of the harsh realities of war, which Obito witnessed, because of war he was able to witness the world's cruelty at a very young age, then seeing a friend kill another friend was the final straw that pushed him over the edge and what led to him to despise the world.
- He consistently has some of the coolest and best fights in the series (his fight against Minato, or his fight against Kakashi, for example), with a lot of people regarding his fight against Kakashi as the best fight in the series.
- Lots of memes have been made about him, most notably when he used Kamui after learning about Itachi’s death at the hands of Sasuke.
- There’s a large part of the fandom that have him as their favorite character in the entire franchise.
What Do People Dislike About Him?[]
- Even when taking the horrors of war into account, many fans feel that Obito’s backstory doesn’t justify or add up to the sheer scale of destruction he caused. Rather than sympathizing with him, some saw his motivations as petty and unconvincing, with many viewing him as an overgrown child instead of a tragic character. Given how emotionally devastating backstories in Naruto can be, many expected something far worse. When Obito’s reasoning was revealed, it had the opposite effect on a large portion of the audience, since it made the audience dislike him even more instead of feeling sorry for him. In short words, his tragic past failed to evoke the intended emotional response, and it led to many fans seeing him as little more than a manchild consumed by a bitter motive.
- Some people find him to be way too overpowered especially when he became the Ten-Tails Jinchurki, with some finding a lot of his abilities to be complete ass pulls as well, like it being suddenly revealed that he had Izanagi during his fight with Konan the whole time, which led to fans stating that Obito won because of plot armor, and because of an ability that he gained out of nowhere.
- Lots of fans didn’t like how he was given the benefit of the doubt, and how quickly he was justified by the main characters, like when Rin quickly accepted Obito’s apology in the afterlife because he “tried his hardest”, even though him trying his hardest was basically him killing thousands of people.
- They also disliked how Kakashi and Minato partially blamed themselves for how Obito turned out, even though Obito turning out this way was almost totally his and his fault alone, not there’s.
- Fans found him constantly talking about Rin after his true identity got revealed to be pretty annoying.
- People mostly preferred Obito when he was acting as Tobi/Madara, they found his personality and overall presence to be much better then when his identity got revealed. After the reveal, many fans found him to be a massive crybaby, and a villain that wasn’t as cool or scary anymore; this is because his design and voice weren’t as terrifying as before, and because of Obito constantly speaking spitefully to Kakashi about Rin. All of this significantly diminished his likability as a character.
