Near is the secondary antagonist of the anime/manga Death Note. He is one of L's successors with his friendly rival Mello, and was raised in the Wammy House that raised many gifted children. After L's death, he becomes the third L and ends the cases with Kira.

What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Him?[]

  • Just like L, he is extremely intelligent, specially considering that he is younger than him. Many like him due to his intellect and accept him as a worthy replacement for L.
  • Although he was intended by the writers to be a weaker replacement to L Lawliet who admits that he could never be better than L, many also think he is considerably different than him. Such as not having a big ego or talking differently which helped many latch to his character.
  • He is arguably the main necessary for the defeat of Light Yagami, which culminated in the well received finale.
  • Since Death Note comes across in having many great theme songs, his theme is very enjoyable for many listen to and further endeared people to him.

What Do People Hate About Him?[]

  • Since he started the investigation later in the series after L died, many think he won too early, with little effort despite not being able to solve the case on his own due to L having already done most of the job.
  • People say he had a very strange way to catch Light, which was to steal his Death Note and recreate the book etch by etch. Near mentions one agent did this, and not a whole team. Light believed it was his Death Note, but realistically a single guy could not recreate an entire notebook to look perfectly like the real one, so his detractors believe Near pulled a nonsensical trick out of his hat.
