Mephiles the Dark is the main antagonist of the 2006 platform game Sonic the Hedgehog.

Mephiles was a sadistic and malevolent entity who was born during the Solaris Project when experiments on Solaris split him into Mephiles and Iblis. After his birth, Mephiles was sealed within the Scepter of Darkness by Shadow the Hedgehog, but was freed ten years later during a skirmish between Shadow, Rouge, and Dr. Eggman.

He is voiced by Takayuki Sakazume in the Japanese version (Who also sticks the role in Shadow Generations). In the English dub, he is voiced by Dan Green (who also voiced Yami Yugi in the English dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! and Mewtwo in the English dub of Mewtwo Strikes Back-Evolution) and Robbie Daymond (who also voiced Goro Akechi from Persona 5).

What Do People Like About Him?

• Alongside with other villains (Black Doom, Eggman Nega, and The End), he is considered one of the darkest villains of the franchise, due not only to his goals of eradicating all of existence, but also for standing out for being the only villain who managed to kill Sonic in a truly shocking scene.
• Many people consider him the best Sonic villain, thanks to the aforementioned, and thanks to that many people want him to return to the franchise as the main villain.
  • Like Black Doom, fanbase adored Mephiles being the dead-serious villain who killed Sonic unlike Infinite from Sonic Forces who is an unintended punching bag. Fanbase adores both Black Doom and Mephiles's return in Sonic x Shadow Generations.
• Many fans believe that he has a badass and scary design.
• Several fans say that he is perhaps the best thing that came out of Sonic 2006, being that it is the worst game in the series.
  • His return in Sonic X Shadow Generations marks his breakout villain title even after Solaris was erased from existence. fans speculate that Iblis may return in another timeline.

What Do People Hate About Him?

• Even before fusing with Iblis as Solaris, both Mephiles boss fights were surprisingly easy in gameplay.
• Many believe that his plan is unnecessarily complicated for what he is trying to do, making him look kinda stupid. Not helping the fact that Silver the Hedgehog trusts his advice despite his blatantly demonic appearance.
