Luke Skywalker is one of the main protagonists in the Star Wars franchise, primarily in the Original Trilogy of movies. In the sequel trilogy of the Disney canon however, Luke was regressed into being a recluse on Ahct-To, out of shame for his attempts at killing Ben Solo leading to his fall to the Dark Side.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- Many love him for being the first protagonist in a Star Wars movie and find him to be a very iconic character. Even when the divisive sequel trilogy came out, many had defended the portrayal he had in The Last Jedi as well as in the Disney canon as a whole.
- Lots of fans love Mark Hamill's acting for the character, especially in Return of the Jedi and The Last Jedi, despite the latter being more divisive. Many memes pertaining to Luke became popular because they loved Mark's acting so much. Even those who might not like Mark Hamill's campiness in The Empire Strikes Back do admit that his portrayal was still great. Many female fans also grew to love Luke because of how attractive they find Hamill to be.
- Seas of people really sympathize with Luke and are glad he's happier as a force ghost.
- He is handed tons of sympathy for many reasons, such as him losing his hand to his father, losing Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, and straight up dying later during the series.
- Many of Luke's fights are considered epic, or very emotionally powerful. The fight in Episode 6 when he fights Darth Vader on the second Death Star is considered incredibly memorable and powerful, even if isn't considered super epic like Ahsoka versus Darth Maul.
- His relationships with the original trilogy protagonists are desired by many and widely praised. The actors are friends which are considered as wholesome as there in-character interactions.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- His flaws in the OT were exaggerated in the ST.
- Due to the changes imposed on him in his elder years, he became hard to sympathize with according to many Star Wars fans, mostly because he left his allies behind to live on a planet in the Unknown Regions where no one could find him, all while people were dying from the creation of the First Order and Ben Solo's downfall. When Rey did find him, he refused to help even after he realized Han was killed.
- Whether they liked Mark's acting or the overall story of The Last Jedi, many people hated seeing Luke Skywalker as a grumpy hermit that looked raggedy, unkempt, and was rude to everyone in the movie besides Leia and C-3PO. Seemingly, most of the Star Wars fans hated seeing Luke drink the green milk, which is an infamous scene.
Trivia[]
- For a time, Mark Hamill hated what Rian Johnson did with the character.
- The Disney canon version of Luke Skywalker eventually got the fan name of “Jake Skywalker” after the changes imposed on him in the sequel trilogy, which was derived from Mark Hamill's mention of Jake in an interview.
- It's arguable that Mark still hates the character, and was only paid to say otherwise later on.
