What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- He's a very charismatic mastermind villainous protagonist who is much more interesting compared to other protagonists because of his smart and manipulative ways.
- He has very cool evil strategies in moments in which fascinates his fans on the way he achieves his goals.
- Him laughing at L's grave and his laugh is considered to be a very iconic moment.
- While he is corrupted by the power of the Death Note, he was once a person with a brilliant future ahead of him, being admired as the most intelligent student in Japan and for being good at solving police cases, evidenced by his amnesiac heroic persona in Yotsuba Arc. This adds some degree of dimensionality to him, particularly in how much of whether he was ever a good person corrupted by power or rotten to begin with.
- Because of his smart ways and how cool and manipulative he was, many of his fans believed that he should've won.
- His performance by both his Japanese and English voice actors is incredibly entertaining and well-done.
- Regardless of version, his death was incredibly memorable and iconic, and many viewers felt genuine sympathy for his anime counterpart's.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- His downfall into becoming a delusional Knight Templar is viewed as rushed and unsatisfying by a part of the audience that would have wanted him to gradually degrade in his morals, and while the author's intent was to make him consistent on his goal as peak all or nothing with his mentality, it makes him a less three-dimensional character in some people's opinion.
- His smugness, sadism and constant self-flagellation is considered incredibly irritating by some members of the fanbase, which makes them dislike him more.
- Some fans dislike that him being less intelligent and calm in the second part, often outsmarted by Mello and Near many times, especially when he immediately goes panic after finding out he failed to kill Near in the warehouse, and experiences a huge villainous breakdown (though these developments may have been because of his success fueling his ego in killing L).
- In the manga, his death was way more pathetic as he bribed Ryuk to kill everyone in a room and when the Shinigami wrote down his name instead, he foolishly tried to undo it despite knowing that having your name written in the Death Note is irreversible and is a guaranteed death, leading to Light repeatedly screaming that he doesn’t want to die only to eventually suffer a fatal heart attack that ends his miserable life.
