King Triton is the overarching protagonist of The Little Mermaid franchise. He is Ariel's father who is the ruler of Atlantica.
From 1989 until 2000, he was voiced by the late Kenneth Mars. In The Little Mermaid III: Ariel's Beginning, he was voiced by Jim Cummings.

What Do People Like About Him?[]
- Most fans like him for his fatherly personality and kind traits to his kingdom, even if it means banning music from his kingdom until he lifts the ban in the third film.
- People appreciate that he's one of several fathers to remain alive in a Disney Princess film, as well as being the second Disney Princess Father after King Stefan from Sleeping Beauty to do so.
- While he did forbid Ariel from seeing humans, it was only due to the fact that his wife Athena was killed by pirates, further showing that he was too depressed about his wife and fear about his daughter's life.
- Later in the film, he changes his mind about humans after Prince Eric defeated Ursula to save him and his kingdom, which impressed most fans.
- Kenneth Mars' performance has played a role in making Triton one of the well known fathers with a fatherly and caring personality.
- Even if some people don't like The Little Mermaid II: Return to Sea, they also appreciate that Triton is not as temperamental or stubborn as he was in the first film.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- In spite of the narrative blaming Triton for causing the conflict of the first film by destroying Ariel's grotto that led to his daughter going to see Ursula that put the kingdom in jeopardy, some detractors don't like him for being a strict and cruel father to Ariel, as shown when he forbids Ariel from going to the surface to explore the human world and when he forbids music from the kingdom.
- Some detractors don't like how they gave him a reason for hating humans, feeling it was too sympathetic and how the movie made it seem like it was perfectly okay for him to take it out on his daughter.
