Mephiles finds the infobox on this page admirable, as it's pretty much dead, as evidenced by how many, if not all sections, in it are as empty as his heart and the land he rules. Next thing you know, he might rule over it.

Ahh... Long live the king.
~ King Sombra's most famous quote.
My crystal slaves...
~ Sombra terrorizing the crystal ponies

King Sombra is the secondary antagonist of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, serving as the main antagonist of both the Season 3 premiere "The Crystal Empire" and the Season 9 premiere "The Beginning of the End".

He is a cruel, sadistic and cold-hearted monstrous unicorn, who once conquered the Crystal Empire by enslaving the inhabitants before being stopped by Princesses Celestia and Luna, but not before casting a curse that would make the Crystal Empire disappeared for a thousand years.

He was voiced by Jim Miller in Season 3, and was voiced by Alvin Sanders in Season 9.

What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Him?[]

  • He is considered (along with Storm King, Chrysalis and Cosmos) one of the darkest villains in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic due not only to his sadistic personality, but to literally ENSLAVE the ponies of the Crystal Empire, making Cadence raise a barrier to protect them (it should be noted that Princess Cadence had not slept or eaten in days in order to protect her kingdom), threatening Flurry Heart (who was an infant alicorn), forcing Cadence and Shining Armor to surrender and making the others see their worst fears as ways to mentally torture them.
    • Although it's not sufficient to make him Laughably Evil, some fans enjoyed his more pompous and arrogant side despite being a bit exaggerated due to some critics considering him too much of a dark character for a kids show in his first appearence, making him at least a decent Game Changer.
  • He is a fairly powerful character, being the only one who never needed help or an army (despite having one) to do things by himself and did not even need allies (Tirek, Chrysalis and Cozy Glow) to take over the Crystal Empire and Equestria for himself (it should be clarified that his "army" were ponies that he brainwashed to achieve his objectives).
  • While it could be pointed as a bad thing, him lacking a backstory and being an enigmatic character ended up making fans to make theories involving him and what he might have done to the point of being considered a huge threat for both Celestia and Luna.
  • Many liked that in Season 9 he was given more screentime and more personality, making many happy to see him back and showing what he was capable of doing.
  • Many consider his design quite cool and badass, and that plus his powers gives him an air of intimidating evil.
  • He is also one of the most successful and competent villains, because as mentioned above, he managed to almost conquer Equestria by himself, he put the Mane 6 in a state of desperation by destroying the Elements and Tree of Harmony (which at that time were one of the most powerful objects that were used to defeat several villains) and if it were not for the conveniences of Spike going with Twilight in Season 3 and the power of friendship in Season 9 he would have won (unless Discord had stopped him later).
  • In general, his personality, his appearance and his almost successful plan, he is considered one of the best MLP villains.

What Do People Hate About Him?[]

  • He is quite divisive due to his inconsistent personality in seasons 3 and 9, many considered him much more intimidating in season 3 due to his deep and scary voice and that in season 9 they turned him into a more arrogant and prideful character similar to Rainbow Dash, while others appreciate that he had a real personality in season 9 and much more screen time than in season 3 where many considered him generic.
    • Also, some believe that his objectives are quite generic, because it is only to conquer a kingdom ignoring the fact that he started a war in an alternative timeline.
  • He lacks a backstory to the point of being a bit too enigmatic.
  • Both defeats felt extremely unjustified and convenient due to the fact that Spike had little to nothing to do with Twilight who was searching the Crystal Heart and would have succeeded had not been for convenience of Spike and the script, in Season 9 it got worse, the convenient power of friendship was activated only because for the sake of it and out of nowhere.
  • His detractors also believe that he is just another edgelord with his dark appearance in red tones, and consider his design very uninspired.
  • In general, he is a character with several mixed opinions in which some find him great, intimidating with several dark moments and others find him as a character with almost no development turned into a dog kicker who does evil because of no reason, because he can and because he wants.
