Jeremiah Valeska, also known as Xander Wilde or The Joker, is the final antagonist of the Fox TV series, Gotham, based off of the Batman comic/media series.
The highly intelligent twin brother of Jerome Valeska, Jeremiah is shown to be resourceful, strategic and, at first glance, sane. However, after being hit with a special brand of laughing toxin, he slowly descends into a psychotic madman, obsessed with Bruce Wayne and carrying out Jerome's plan "sanely."
Like his twin, he is portrayed by Cameron Monahagn.
What Makes Him a Base-Breaking Character[]
Why Do Some People Love Him?[]
- Unlike Jerome, who had to compensate for his lack of obvious Joker-ish qualities with an (albeit stellar) personality and performance, Jeremiah most looks like a faithful adaptation of the Joker, having the signature white skin, colored hair, red lips and flamboyant suits.
- He brought back many of the forgotten aspects of the iconic villain, making him a faithful representation of Joker's first years of crime, combining it with aspects of the more classic and modern Joker.
- Cameron's performance became more close to the infamous maniac and classic "Joker-ish" in season five, particularly in the finale, where he gave what in many fans' eyes was a perfect hybrid of mania and calculating nature, fully getting what many fans considers the most complete and faithful Joker. The playful nihlist mastermind obsessed and sadistic.
- Many fans believed that Jeremiah and Jerome both represented both sides of the Joker- Jerome being the psychotic anarchist who lives to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting Gotham, and Jeremiah being the criminal mastermind who is on par with Batman himself in terms of planning and intelligence.
- On his own, he is a fairly competent villain who plans ahead, serves as a legitimate challenge to the protagonist and has many entertaining scenes.
- He has many of the most iconic Joker quotes of all the character's mythos.
Why Do Some People Hate Him?[]
- Many found his mere existence forced, and a cheeky move by the writers to have a Joker-like character in the plot after killing off Jerome. Additionally, his transformation into Gotham's official-unofficial Joker undermines who, in the eyes of many, was seen as a worthy adaptation of the Clown Prince of Crime.
- Cameron's performance in Jeremiah's first outing as "the Joker" was cold and stoic, although still with it's flair, Jerome's stylish and showman type insanity leaved a mark on fandom that made Jeremiah's behavior look less attractive in comparison. Monaghan focused so much on difference them both, causing his character to not attract so much as his brother did.
- The motivation of his obsession for Bruce Wayne is so subtle that people can't see it at least you pointing it out, making it look forced despite not being it. Although this is a writing failure itself more than a character's problem.
- Some people believed his final look as The Joker was unrespectful with Monaghan's masterful iconic interpretation of both twins. Specially with it's bold head and just some green hairs floating there.
