I've gone where the universe takes me my whole life. It's better to make those decisions for yourself.
~ Jane to her boyfriend Jesse.

What Makes Her a Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Her?[]

  • Many fans find her personality to be charming, witty, likable and alluring.
  • She is often considered very physically attractive.
  • Her addiction and attempts to stay sober and connect with her father are seen as sympathetic and positive traits of hers.
  • Her relationship with Jesse Pinkman is seen as having significant chemistry and constrasing from the dark tone of the show, showcasing glimpses of happiness, tenderness, and love amongst very troubled characters.
    • She also offers him guidance and advice, such as Jesse's flashback in El Camino where she tells him that it is better to make your own decisions than go wherever life takes you.
    • Their plan to use Jesse's money to escape offers a glimmer of hope for the two of them.
  • She stands up for Jesse by blackmailing Walter into giving him money as per a deal that was made.
  • Her death at the hands of Walter White is treated with significant sympathy and consequences in the series, resulting in Jesse's depression and self-loathing, her father's suicide, and indirectly causing a plane crash.
    • Many fans also agree that Walter letting her die was primarily motivated by a desire for control over Jesse as opposed to removing toxic influences from his life.
    • They also argue that she knew not to lie on her back in order to avoid choking on her vomit in the event of an overdose, which supporters use to deflect the idea that her death was her own fault considering she was repositioned by Walter.

What Do People Hate About Her?[]

  • Despite their genuine love for each other, many detractors find that the relationship between Jesse and Jane is highly toxic or manipulative, with both of them bringing out the worst of each other. This is exemplified by Jesse hooking Jane back on drugs and Jane blackmailing Walter to give Jesse his money.
    • Walter also avoided giving Jesse his money over the fear that he would use it all for drugs and wind up overdosing, which many fans saw as a valid reason to do so.
  • Walter letting Jane die is sometimes highlighted by detractors as a justified action, as both Jesse and Jane may have ended up overdosing to death if they kept bringing each other down. They also argue that Walter had no obligation to save her considering she had blackmailed him. However, this is highly controversial and often seen as apologia.
    • Some also argue that her death resulting from her overdose was her own fault for abusing drugs.
  • The plane crash that results from Jane's father grief-stricken air-traffic control after learning his daughter died is often highlighted by detractors as highly unrealistic or absurd. The show also implies that Walter has a high level of responsibility for it, which detractors believe is a stretch.
  • Some detractors view her character as having not been properly fleshed out and being utilized as more of a plot-device.
