Isaac Laforeze is the main antagonist of Castlevania: Curse of Darkness and is the rival of Hector, the protagonist of the video game. He is a loyal servant of Dracula and seeks to destroy humanity in his name. But after his master's death and being defeated by his rival, Hector, Isaac became extremely vengeful and seeks revenge on him while wanting to resurrect Dracula.
For the English dub, Isaac is voiced by Liam O'Brien, who played Infinite from Sonic Forces, and Moriya Endo for the Japanese dub.
What Makes Him a Base-Breaking Character?[]
Why Do People Like Him?[]
- Fans like him for representing the Red Oni and Blue Oni trope as he is a rival to the game protagonist, Hector. Isaac is an extremely misanthropic man who holds no care for humanity and is a fanatical follower of Dracula while Hector is the complete opposite.
- Liam O'Brien's performance is loved for fitting the over the top nature of the character and being genuinely funny.
- Some people like his dominatrix-inspired design as it represents the overall crazy nature of his character.
- Some fans find Isaac as a tragic character since it was revealed in the game that despite his evil, he was just a pawn for Dracula and his curse worsening Isaac's unpleasant attributes making him more insane than how he was. By the end of the game, he dies as another pawn of his master and as a vessel for his return while not being acknowledge by him.
- Even though some fans prefer his Netflix counterpart, this version of the character is appreciated by those same fans due to Liam O'Brien's hammy performance and Isaac's chaotic evil attitude in the game, giving him "evil is cool" vibes.
Why Do People Dislike Him?[]
- Many detractors find Isaac as a flat character due to his lack of characterization and view his over the top nature as edgy since he is never given a reason to hate humanity, which makes Isaac come off as "evil for the sake of doing evil" type of villain. He is pretty much viewed as another typical fanatical follower of Count Dracula. The game does not even explain much of his relationship with Hector unless you read the prequel manga but even from there he is still viewed as an edgelord.
- His relationship with his sister Julia is not explained either. They are randomly revealed of being siblingings but nothing has been said of what they think of each other. This leaves both Isaac and Julia as simple plot devices for Hector's development.
- Many detractors much prefer his animated counterpart where he not only has much more depth in the story but his personality and relationship with Dracula is greatly expanded upon. Isaac in the show is portrayed as a calm stoic man, who hates humanity for the mistreatment he has faced and witnessing the dark underbelly that is human corruption. After Dracula's demise, Isaac goes on a journey of self-discovery as a way to find a purpose in life.
- Despite being a race-swap character, he is genuinely well received by many detractors of the original character for being nuance and well-written.
- Some find the sexual overtones in his characterization very creepy and unsettling, which made some players uncomfortable. Not only does it drive home of him being edgy for the sake of it but it oddly shows his masochistic personality in such a strange way.
- To make matters worse, the game, for some reason, implies that Isaac is gay, which made some people feel that the game is placing harmful stereotypes and tropes on Isaac, like the deprave homosexual for example. This was notice when he was spotted kissing the back of Trevor's head after stabbing him and making lewd hand gestures in front of Hector in the beginning of the game.
- Some detractors don't like Isaac's design as they felt it was extremely over the top for the tone and aesthetic of the series.
