Hubie is the main protagonist of Don Bluth's The Pebble and the Penguin. He is an adelié penguin who is a member of Antartica's rookery of Adelié penguins. He wants to find the perfect pebble for Marina, but Hubie has to compete with Drake if he wants to win Marina's heart. During his fish-out of water adventure to get back to Antarctica, he meets and eventually befriends a short rockhopper penguin named Rocko and learns that it's not the perfect pebble, but rather the perfect penguin who gets the pebble.
He is voiced by Martin Short, who also voiced Stefano in Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted.

What Do People Like About Him?[]
- First and foremost, fans appreciate the character development he goes through. He went from a shy, weak, self-doubting penguin who only focused on getting the perfect pebble to a brave, assertive, optimistic penguin who knows the perfect pebble doesn't get the girl, but the perfect penguin does.
- Even before his character development, he has some backbone, as he stands up to people for how they treated him; as an example, He did not hesitate to put Drake in his place, as he called him a big bully, even then, it is extremely hard to feel sympathy for Drake given everything he has done.
- He doesn't give up hope easily. After he failed to get a pebble for Marina, he wished on a star for a pebble. Upon getting the pebble, he eagerly rushes off to show Marina the pebble. Likewise, he doesn't listen to Rocko when he says he'll never make it back to Antarctica, but rather insists he'll get back on time.
- Whether or not one dislikes him, his awkward and clumsy nature is not entirely his fault. He had a hard time getting a single pebble when it was time for all the males to head to pebble beach and claim their pebbles. Other males tackled, pushed him, swiped any pebble he got out of his hand. Not to mention, his stuttering makes him a prime target for Drake to bully.
- He has a heartwarming relationship with Marina. Instead of her beauty, Hubie fell in love with Marina for her sweet, kind-hearted nature. Though, it is not uncommon for people to ship him with Rocko.
- Hubie proposes to Marina after rescuing her for Drake, even if he doesn't have his obligatory pebble with him, which ultimately proves he cares more about Marina than his pebble.
- Speaking of Rocko, he has the best chemistry with him out of all the characters in the film, as he constantly tries to befriend him throughout the movie, which he does later on. He was heartbroken when he thought he lost Rocko to the killer whales.
- He has some of the funniest moments in the film, he is incredibly funny with his clumsy moments and his friendship puns in Looks Like I Got Me A Friend.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- He is clingy and overbearing, as he constantly tries to get Rocko to befriend him, regardless of how the latter feels.
- A rather notorious case is Hubie holding his breath all because Rocko wouldn't admit he likes him as a friend. He passes out, which causes Rocko to feel concern for him; instead of thanking Rocko for his concern over him, Hubie screams at Rocko to say that he likes him, which made him remarkably immature, though this is very minor, as he manages to get it over with.
- His attempts at comedy are thought to be poor by some, with the jokes often relying on his clumsy nature.
- Similar to Marina, his character design comes off as too human like by detractors; on top of the teeth and fingers, which no penguin possesses in real life.
- While he has a personality, it never goes beyond a simple bashful, clumsy, dim-witted simp, who loves Marina. Detractors often wonder what Marina sees in him.
