Vecna is the secondary antagonist of Stranger Things.

What Maies Him A Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Him?[]

  • Jamie Campbell Bower does a fantastic vibe job bringing out his cool, creepy and evil vibes. Even the young actor, Raphael Luce, is able to give young Henry an unsettling vibe.
  • He is shown to be a chessmaster and great manipulator, having planned his father's imprisonment, escape from Hawkins Lab, breaking the gate between Hawkins and Upside Down among other things.
  • He has received many praises for his appearance as an allegorical character for depression.

Why Do People Dislike Him?[]

  • His detractors didn’t like that he was revealed as the one behind the Mind Flayer, and think that it ruined the eldritch aspect of the show.
    • The First Shadow stage play takes a step further and ends up retconning his past shown in Season 4 by giving him a tragic backstory and saying he was manipulated and brainwashed by the Mind Flayer the whole time. It feels completely out of place and coming from nowhere, completely contradicting the reveal in Season 4 where he was shown to be a mastermind who manipulated the Mind Flayer and just how much of an evil psychopath he showed himself to be, even if the elements of the stage play would be revealed in the forthcoming fifth season. The ones who didn’t like him being the true mastermind think that this twist was terrible.
  • The stage play gives his character continuity errors as Henry would mutilate Principal Newby, which many townsfolks became aware of and traced to him, the same way Vecna kills in the present. This causes it to make no sense that nobody would at least think of Henry who they all knew in the past.
  • While many enjoy it, others find his cartoonishly evil personality to make him a bland mustache-twirling villain. This is pretty evident when he explains his backstory to Nancy Wheeler (and Eleven) just to prove how evil he is, then lets her go and bites him back later, giving him a Disney villain defeat.
  • Many don't find his withered form very scary or interesting, ironically thinking human Henry is scarier.
