“ | My fellow humans have never treated me with love, and I punish them for it. But I wouldn't have them suffer. Then, like any animal, I think the world would be poorer with their extinction. I would just see to it that they couldn't harm anyone else. | „ |
~ Hector's view on humanity. |
Hector is one of the major characters of Castlevania: The Animated Series, who serves as Dracula's most trusted servants. He is a lonely pacifist who seeks to have humanity be ruled by vampires as he felt it would bring order to mankind with their flaws being controlled. Later on in the series, he becomes a slave for Carmilla, who wants to take over as the new ruler of vampires and constantly abuse Hector. As a useful slave, Hector uses his chances to get revenge on Carmilla for manipulating him.
He is voiced by Theo James in the English dub and Takahiro Sakurai in the Japanese dub.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- He has a sympathetic backstory of being abused by his parents, who strongly hated him with his mother disliking his existence and his father telling him that the world is cruel and should stop whining about it. In response to this abuse, he burned down his home killing both of his parents.
- Hector has an interesting set of powers relating to forging monsters and reanimating the dead.
- He has a cute care for animals and strongly sympathize with them.
- His interactions with Isaac and Dracula are interesting with it establishing their relationship and why Dracula cares about them.
- Many sympathize his constant suffering in the hands of Carmilla, who was manipulating Hector to betray Dracula and took him as her personal slave while beating and berating him.
- His relationship with Lenore is considered by others of being interesting and complex for both characters.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Most fans felt the adaptation made a heavy downgrade of Hector's character as he went from a fighter to a gentle pacifist. In the Curse of Darkness video game (a Castlevania game that the show took some of its inspiration), Hector was a confident fighter who is said to be highly skilled in devil forging, it got to the point where he is favored by Dracula. In the story, he betrayed Dracula on his own volition and regretted working for him.
- But in the animated series, Hector is portrayed as a naive young man, who gets easily manipulated by others. It's even worse when he tried to resurrect Dracula as atonement for his betrayal, even though he is aware of Dracula's manipulation over him, and being easily tricked into sex with Lenore, who enslaved him and called him her "pet".
- Some of his detractors felt that his story is pretty irrelevant when compared to other characters in the series including Isaac, who has a more interesting story arc of learning his purpose in the world and growing out of his misanthropic beliefs.
- Detractors tend to mock Hector as they felt he is a pathetic man, who does not stand up for himself against those who are trying to manipulate him.
- His naive personality is viewed as annoying since he does not question the motives of those who are trying to use him and landing in worse situations for himself because of it.
- His detractors felt he did not develop at all as a character until the end of the show.
- Many detractors view Hector as a poorly written character as they could not sympathize with him and the situations he lands himself into.

Trivia[]
- There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Hector's portrayal in the show with the fanbase holding very mix opinions from positive, neutral, and negative. To make things worse, a lot of fans started to believe that Warren Ellis, the writer of the show, purposely written Hector to be pathetic due to Theo James voice sounding heroic. In his words, he said that he found Theo James voice too heroic, which made him hate Theo but felt his voice is able to show a sense of insecurity and invulnerability, something he liked, leading him to torture Hector even more.
- It wasn't made any better when Adi Shankar, the producer of the first two seasons, admitted that he had a falling out with Warren Ellis by saying "it turned ugly real fast" and has stated many times that his favorite characters from the video game franchise are Hector and Alucard. This has lead a lot of fans to speculate that Shankar did not like how Ellis was writing those two characters and fell into conflicted with him, and Ellis purposely written Hector the way he is in the show just to spite Adi Shankar.
