NOTE: This article should only contain information about the Netflix adapted version of Hannah Baker as the original 2007 novel version is not Base Breaking. |
Hannah Baker is the posthumous overarching protagonist of the Netflix original series 13 Reasons Why adapted from the 2007 novel of the same name by Jay Asher.
She was a student at Libert High School and close friend of Clay Jensen who ended up killing herself and leaving tapes behind to get revenge on her victims, which influences the series.
She was portrayed by Katherine Langford.
What Makes Her a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Her?[]
- Many find her beautiful due to her attractive design and Katherine Langford's appearance.
- Many find her a relatable character due to her struggles at high school and sympathize with how she wanted a normal life but was driven to suicide due to constant bullying.
- Some like her sarcastic and witty personality.
- Some people enjoy her romantic dynamics with characters like Clay and Zach .
What Do People Dislike About Her?[]
- Some fans do not like her sarcastic personality and feel she can come off as rude and annoying.
- Many do not like that she is a jerk to Clay frequently, especially in earlier episodes, which leads to him becoming insecure. Examples include repeatedly calling him Helmet and comparing him to the more desirable Justin Foley, but hypocritically gets mad if Clay says anything to interject this. While understandable, many also don't like how she later continuously pushes Clay away when he does nothing but want to help her.
- Fans do not like how she is continuously shown to be a pushover despite her extroverted personality. Since she is shown to be confident, sarcastic and well-spoken, it does not make sense that she does not even try to shut down rumors about her and never attempts to fix any of her problems.
- While Bryce and Marcus completely deserved it, some feel that some of her Tape Subjects such as Justin Foley, Zach Dempsey, Mr. Porter and Clay did not deserve to be on the tapes.
- Zach never harmed her in any way and even tried getting to know her, but made herself unapproachable. This is made worse by the fact that Season 2 retcons that they had an entire relationship for a few months where Zach did nothing but treat her well and they loved eachother, yet she never mentions this in the tapes and treats him just as badly as the others who wronged her much more.
- Mr. Porter did everything he could to try to get her to open up about her problems but she chooses not to speak up and leaves his office (and legally Mr. Porter is not allowed to follow her out.)
- Clay did nothing but try to help her all the time and she literally pushes him away, then thinks his life should be ruined because he didn't stay with her, despite screaming at him to leave.
- Fans do not like that she calls out Justin for letting Bryce rape Jessica, when Bryce pushed him out of the room and would have beat him up, while she was in the closet and could have stopped it or at least filmed it for evidence. While it is understandable that she was scared, she never reflects on her actions and only blames Justin.
- She comes off as self-centered as she seems to simply expect people to chase after her and "read her mind" when she refuses to open up, then gets angered people like her parents, Mr. Porter and Clay don't understand her. She also pushes away people who are always nice to her like the librarian guy who even tries to check up on her.
- Some fans question her logic as despite knowing that Bryce is a serial rapist, she goes to a party at his house anyways, indicating she should know the dangers of it.
- Many feel she comes off as a poor, offensive and unrealistic portrayal of mental illness providing the wrong message that self-harm could solve anything.
- Many dislike how in Season 2 she is a ghost who simply follows Clay around to haunt him and feel like it adds nothing to the plot.
- She is simply completely forgotten about by Season 3. While this had to be done due to the actress quitting, many feel they handle this very poorly and end up replacing her with an unlikeable Scrappy Replacement named Ani Achola.
