“ | The Beast will make off with your children. He'll come after them in the night. We're not safe until his head is mounted on my wall. I say we kill the Beast! | „ |
~ Gaston inviting the villagers to storm the castle and kill the Beast. |
Gaston is the main antagonist of Disney's 30th full-length animated feature film, Beauty and the Beast. He was the town's traitorous, egotistical, and arrogant hunter who was after Belle in order to marry her.
In most media, he is voiced by Richard White. In the 2017 live-action remake of the same name, he was portrayed by Luke Evans.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- Most fans appreciate that he serves as the foil to the Beast as he is handsome on the outside but he is secretly an arrogant and egotistical hunter who will stop at nothing to take Belle as his wife.
- He has plenty of comedic moments and has his own share of Evil is Cool moments, such as showing off his chest hair and the part where he sings with Lefou about a song that praises him. He also rides a black horse with red eyes and epically plays tug-of-war with a demonically designed club and has a sweet voice and gorgeous face and body, so he feels much more like a guilty-pleasure character than a hateable one.
- Furthermore, most fans consider his chemistry with Lefou to be one of the best highlights of Beauty and the Beast.
- He initially tried to be affable with women and is still a good pal to his friends.
- He is known for being the second Disney Villain after Professor Ratigan to have two songs, being "Gaston" and the "Mob Song".
- Richard White's performance fits well with the character regarding his charisma that carries on the film.
- Overall, he is among one of the funniest characters of Beauty and the Beast by far.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- While being effective as a villain, there are still some detractors that consider him to be lackluster and not too evil compared to other Disney Villains that are dark and intimidating such as Maleficent, Jafar, Scar, and Frollo.
- Detractors were upset that he loses his comedic and charming side that made him unique. This all started when he bribed Monsieur D'Arque to lock up Maurice unless Belle agrees to marry Gaston.
- Despite being tough, detractors didn't like how much of a coward he can be when he begs the Beast to spare his life, as it feels contradictory.
Trivia[]
- He and Scar are the only two villains from the Disney Renaissance era to be Base Breaking Characters.
