He does have a bit of a clever side to him, as he whispers his plan to Gussie Mausheimer to create a Giant Mouse of Minsk to scare Warren T. and his gang of cats onto a boat heading for Hong Kong.

Other people find him to be annoying and dumb, even for a child. His voice can get on people's nerves, even more so when voiced by Thomas Dekker in the direct-to-video sequels.
Most people argue that he would have avoided getting separated from his family if he had obeyed his papa's orders to stay close to the family and not let his curiosity get the better of him.
Some people frown upon his portrayal in the direct-to-video sequels, which show him having regressed back to a naïve and easily frightened little kid, a far cry from his character development and maturity in the theatrical sequel, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West.
