Eobard Thawne, also known as the Reverse Flash, is the main antagonist of the CW TV Show known as The Flash.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- In the first season, he had an enigmatic aura to him, which adds to the complexity to his character.
- He has numerous iconic quotes and memes that he made throughout the show.
- Some of these being "My goals are beyond your understanding", "I'm not like the Flash at all, some would say that I'm the Reverse", "Now who's the villain, Flash? Now WHO'S THE VILLAIN?", "Merry Christmas", and many more.
- He has a complex chemistry with Barry Allen/the Flash throughout the show with Thawne being his mentor as Harrison Wells, and this is made even better by his actors Tom Cavanagh and Matt Letscher, who both help to bring him to life as a cold, serious, and iconic main antagonist.
- He became even more likeable when he was in Legends of Tomorrow as it shows Matt Letscher's full potential as Eobard Thawne and it shows him getting over his spite towards Barry for greater goals as he is the only version of Thawne to be a Magnificent Baddie.
- He is one of (if not) the most intelligent characters in the entire Arrowverse, and his intelligence helps to give him numerous evil is cool moments.
- His original suit has an intimidating feel to it, and it is made even more intimidating with Eobard's red eyes, vibrating body, and demonic voice modulation.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- His repeated returns from the dead, despite literally being erased from existence multiple times is seen by many fans as him having rather excessive plot armor and him feeling overused. What makes it worse is that the show-writers overuse Tom Cavanagh to where Matt Letscher barely gets any screentime except for a few moments of season 1, one episode of season 2 and 3, and then one episode of season 9 despite being the original Eobard Thawne.
- Joining the Earth-X Nazis eliminated the opportunity to see an evil Barry or an evil Flash in Crisis on Earth-X. (granted Barry already dealed with an Evil Barry/Flash with Savitar)
- He goes through numerous downgrades during season 6-8.
- Eric Wallace takes Eobard's small pettiness that he had in early seasons and flanderized him to make his pettiness his entire personality, he even gave Tom Cavanagh lines that were unlike anything that Thawne says.
- He is comparatively dumber than his earlier versions as he begins to say things that his past versions would never say (such as "I WON, I FINALLY WON, WHO'S FASTER NOW?!?!") as well as him not even being the mastermind that he used to be in seasons 1-5 but is now someone with no control and cannot actually scheme anything for himself, being reduced to nothing more than a bitter pawn.
- His origin story post crisis was ruined. At least his old backstory has some level of understanding to it as he became Reverse Flash he became evil because it portrays him as working hard for years to become like his idol (even duplicating the reaction) but then being confronted by his fate that he was meant to be Barry's enemy rather than his friend, which drove him insane. His post-crisis backstory, meanwhile, is completely and utterly pathetic as he became a villain because Barry "stole" Eobard's greatest moment.
- His Earth Prime suit is a significant downgrade to his original suit since he now looks like a banana, which takes away his scary factor. To make things worse, the Negative Flash suit not only takes away his scary factor, but it makes him look goofy since it makes him too bulky and removes the chin strap.
