~ Diavolo |
Diavolo, also known as the Boss, is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Kars) of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise. He is the overarching antagonist of Part III: Stardust Crusaders and the main antagonist of Part V: Golden Wind.
As the founder of Passione, a drug-dealing crime syndicate, Diavolo is responsible for the proliferation of Stand users around the world upon his discovery of the Stand Arrows. He is also the alter of Vinegar Doppio.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- He is one of the most enigmatic characters in JoJo franchise. Despite being set up as the main antagonist from the very start of Golden Wind, next to nothing is known about him, including his appearance and name, however he keeps an intimidating presence just by being mentioned, making him very mysterious and scary as the Big Bad.
- He has a stylish and sexy character design.
- His voice is very deep and majestic, thanks to both Katsuyuki Konishi and Kellen Goff's voice acting in the anime, as well as Toshiyuki Morikawa in video game.
- King Crimson is a cool stand with the ability to erase time, making him a formidable opponent to Giorno and Bucciarati.
- His interactions with his alter ego Doppio are pretty funny, giving him many Laughably Evil moments. Though, he's usually Seriously Evil when it comes to face their enemies.
- He has many iconic evil-is-cool moments, such like "this is a test" of his personality shift scene.
- His ultimate fate of being trapped in a death loop becomes a meme. Narrative-wise, he deserves it for his overwhelming paranoia.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Detractors think he is a relatively flat hidden villain who is mysteriously evil for the sake of it. Many of his villainous deeds such as torturing his mother, killing the priest that raised him and setting his village on fire are given no reason, and his motive of being evil is barely explained.
- The Detractors who read manga were also confused how does his stand powers, King Crimson and Epitaph work. The anime adaptation eventually explains his Stand powers. In which, King Crimson erases time by changing the past to altering the future events up to 11 seconds and delivering the instant-killing blow as well as rapid-fire fisticuffs, while Epitaph predicts any incoming events in 10 seconds ahead, such as the opponent is fated to get hurt. That said, Diavolo could misinterpret the possible fate that shown in Epitaph's vision.
- Much of his backstory is unrealistic, such as how he was born from a two year pregnancy and how he managed to keep his mother under the floor alive for years, both of which are never explained and seem unrelated to King Crimson's stand ability.
- Some of his acts are incredibly incomprehensible, for example, if he wants to kill Trish, he could have done that after Bucciarati successfully delivered her to him and left the tower, but instead he tried to kill her right in front of Bucciarati, which destroyed Bucciarati's respect to him and caused the whole team to rebel against him to protect Trish.
- His final battle against Giorno is seen by many as somewhat anti-climactic, as it focuses on seizing arrow instead of fighting with their respective ability, and after the arrow is grabbed by Giorno, he is defeated rather easily.
- Despite being played for karmic satisfaction, some fans still feel sympathy for Diavolo's fate worse than death and think it too harsh and extreme of a fate for him.
Trivia[]
- He is the author's 4th favorite character, according to a poll he made.
