She is portrayed by Shelley Long.
What Makes Her a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Her?[]
- She is one of the most altruistic and kind-hearted people on the show, always striving to do the morally correct thing as possible.
- Fans enjoy her incredibly witty personality and how she can hold her own against the already sarcastic bar staff and patrons.
- Fans love her romantic and comedic chemistry Sam and said relationship is considered one of the most iconic romances in TV history.
- She is very attractive, in-universe and out, due to being played by Shelley Long.
- Some of her moments of awkwardness, insecurity, and willingness to sometimes join in on the bar's irreverence is considered adorable by fans.
What Do People Hate About Her?[]
- She is incredibly pretentious. Constantly looking down at the bar's more working man and common taste in contrast to her more sophisticated interests such as opera, art, and literature. This is especially the case with Sam, who she often mocks for being into interests she considers juvenile like the Three Stooges, rock music, and cartoons.
- While her ex-boyfriend Frasier Crane is also a pretentious snob, he is at least self-aware and is capable of indulging himself and relaxing at Cheers. Diane, on the other hand, often insists on holding herself in a snooty manner, which makes her far less likable than Frasier.
- She is very sanctimonious, as she almost always sees herself as in the right and thinks the bar is full of lowbrows, idiots, and jerks. While she certainly has a point given how Carla, Cliff, Norm, and Sam can sometimes act as such, she can often go too far in her judgement, often ignoring how the patrons and staff can be very caring and are good people at heart. This behavior makes her come across as insufferable to some viewers.
- She is a hypocrite. Diane often belittles Sam and others for being stupid and immature, but she has acted impulsively and done many actions that can be considered worse than anything Sam has done.
- She sometimes unecessarily gets involved in the affairs of others. While this is born out of a desire to help people for the better, several viewers just find it annoying that she constantly meddles in situations she has no business meddling in, especially when she sometimes makes certain situations even worse.
- After her and Sam broke up, she fell in love and had a relationship with Frasier Crane, with the latter genuinely loving her. However, she still harbored feelings for Sam and their sexual tension continued. This led to her relationship to Frasier growing less and less happy. It reaches a breaking point where she eventually leaves Frasier at the atler during their wedding, utterly humiliating him.
