Toya Todoroki, better known as Dabi or Blueflame, is a major antagonist in the My Hero Academia franchise.
He is a member of the League of Villains and leader of its sub-group, the Vanguard Action Squad, who seemingly follows Stain's ideology and concepts. In reality, he is the eldest son of the superhero Endeavor, seeking vengeance against him for his mistakes in the past. He is the arch-nemesis of both his father Endeavor and his youngest brother, Shoto Todoroki.
In the anime, he is voiced by Hiro Shimono in Japanese, and Jason Liebrecht in the English dub.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- His design and powers look cool and intimidating.
- He has a sympathetic backstory which makes many fans feel sorry for him; he was abused and neglected by his father Endeavor which made him suffer mentally to the point of suffering an existential crisis, and when he ended up missing for three years he found that Endeavor had moved on and continued his abuse with Shoto, making him plot to get revenge on his father.
- Many fans theorized that he was Toya Todoroki even before he was revealed and were satisfied to be proven right, wishing to see how he interacts with his family.
- His fans rooted for him to get revenge on Endeavor, with his hatred towards him being understandable after all the abuse he subjected him to and his exposure of Endeavor's crimes being considered to be satisfying given how he got away with his traumatic abuse being swept under the rug for so long.
- He has a final heartfelt moment in his very last appearance, where he answers Shoto's question about what his favorite food was, and he tearfully apologized to him out of remorse for nearly killing him, causing fans to feel sorry for him and appreciate how he really did have a heart in the end even after becoming worse as time went on, which culminated in his death finally being mourned by the Todoroki family.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Some find him hard to sympathize with since he has negative traits that aren't justified by his backstory, like hating the rest of his family for enabling Endeavor's abuse even though they couldn't do anything about it, trying to attack Shoto when he was a baby out of jealousy, continuing to train even when Endeavor told him not to due to his Quirk being harmful to himself and letting his hatred fester rather than telling his family where he had been when he went missing. He even admitted that he enjoys killing people who had nothing to do with his tragedy.
- Some people compare him to Sasuke Uchiha, another Base Breaking character. Because both use their past as Excuse to commit horrible crimes, being also annoying, edgy jerks with fanbase of teenage fanboys/fangirls obsessed with edgy and "tragic" villains
- His final battle, where he refused to die despite his Quirk destroying his body until he lets his Quirk do so in a suicide bombing attempt, is considered to be tiring due to slow pacing of the plot, with his writing coming across as only letting him get defeated when the plot says so.
