Dandy Crow, Fats, Deacon, Dopey and Speaks are supporting characters in Disney's 4th full-length animated feature, Dumbo. They are five wisecracking crows who teach Dumbo how to fly.
They were voiced by the late Cliff Edwards, the late James Baskett, and the late Hall Johnson.
What Makes Them Base Breaking Characters?[]
What Do People Like About Them?[]
- Most fans appreciate their character development as they went from being initial bullies to being helpful allies, as shown when they get scolded by Timothy for laughing at Dumbo and noticied that Dumbo can learn to fly with his ears. Because of this, it allows Dumbo to fly and reunite with his mother.
- Dandy Crow gets bonus points for having the same voice as Jiminy Cricket, courtesy of the late Cliff Edwards, while Fats gets bonus points for sharing the same actor as Uncle Remus, courtesy of the late James Baskett.
- Additionally, several people point out that they're one of several characters other than Timothy to actually care and support Dumbo, regardless of his big ears.
What Do People Hate About Them?[]
- Several detractors accuse the crows for being offensive stereotypes for African-Americans, even by today’s standards.
- Furthermore, others point out that Dandy's name is Jim Crow, which is noted to mock the controversial laws in the Southern part of America.
- As a result, some book adaptations that came after the release of the 2019 live-action remake of the same name excluded them.
Trivia[]
- Ironically, despite their main criticism being that they are stereotypes of African-Americans, a large portion of the Crows' fanbase are African-Americans, who enjoy the fact that the Crows are polite characters despite being stereotypical.
