Courtney is a major antagonist in the Canadian animated franchise Total Drama.
She is a perfectionist and competitive girl who joins the titular reality TV show to win the one million dollars prize. However, while most of her fellow teammates and campers show interest in socializing and befriending each other in addition to competing for the million, Courtney prioritizes the million over anything, even love and friends.
What Makes Her a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Her?[]
- She has a lot of fans who like her for her entertaining personality and character development, giving her a complex and interesting character, as well as her voice actress Emilie Claire-Barlow's performance.
- She's one of the most focused contestants on the game, which is useful for a reality show with eliminations.
- Her development in "Basic Straining" is considered to be satisfying and endearing.
- Some believe her problems to be understandable, such as her anger towards Harold for getting her eliminated to spite Duncan, and Duncan cheating on her for Gwen (whom was her friend at the time) during World Tour.
- Her positive development and friendship with Gwen in All-Stars were well-received. When it ultimately turned out to have been fake, her fans believed that she was a good character affected by poor writing and some fans made rewrites and fanfictions to make her character development turn out better.
- Some of her fans think that in spite of her actions, the humiliation that she suffered during "Sunday Muddy Sundae" was too excessive.
What Do People Hate About Her?[]
- She was brutally flanderized throughout her appearances in the show. Starting off as decent and likable in Total Drama Island, she gradually became more villainous and unlikable over time, to the point she became one of the most hated characters both in-universe and out.
- Her character first suffered during the Total Drama special, where she abandoned Duncan just for spraining his knee and after he wrestled an alligator for the million dollars and attempted to murder several contestants.
- In Total Drama Action, she became an entitled and spoiled brat who calls her lawyers just to get an advantage, and she treated Duncan in an abusive and controlling way during their relationship.
- World Tour hit her harder, as many find her unsympathetic for bringing Duncan's infidelity towards her on herself by learning absolutely nothing from abusing him, attempting to kill Gwen out of childish rage upon discovering that she and Duncan kissed, and hypocritically flirting with other male contestants just to make Duncan jealous, such as Tyler and Alejandro (though the latter was manipulating her) whom already had romantic relationships.
- Her reputation as a base-breaking character was cemented in the infamous "Sunday Muddy Sundae", where she seemed like she was going to redeem herself, but ultimately proved that she was ultimately going to betray Gwen just to win the million dollar prize. While some believe that she deserved all of her hatred and humiliation for her selfishness and crimes, others blame poor writing for derailing Courtney's character and wasting her character development, which contributed to the bad reputation the episode and All-Stars as a whole.
Trivia[]
- If Total Drama Island had been a single season, she wouldn’t count as Base-Breaking since her divisive traits only came in later seasons.
