Clayton "Clay" Jason Jensen is the main protagonist of the novel 13 Reasons Why and it's Netflix adaptation. He's a high school student who mourns the death of his best friend and love-interest, Hannah Baker. One day after returning home from school Clay is given a box of cassette tapes at his front doorstep which he borrows his dad's boombox to listen to in order to reveal that the cassette tapes are a posthumous message to Clay himself and everyone else that contributed to her death.
He was portrayed by Dylan Minnette.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- Some people like how empathetic and compassionate his character is, as those two traits of his only grow as the series progresses when he listens to Hannah's tapes and shows genuine concern and affability towards the people around him.
- His quest to seek justice for Hannah is not only by trying to understand the gravity of her situation and why she did what she did but also by uncovering the truth and getting those who hurt her to be held accountable.
- Admire him for his bravery and courage, best exemplified when he successfully talks Tyler out of shooting up the school even when he has a gun pointed right at him.
- Overall, he's a good person with misguided morals, which some argue is to be expected of him, considering he is just a teenager and still has much to learn going forward.
- People responded very well to Dylan Minnette's performance as Clay Jensen, having felt that he portrayed and played his role fantastically.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Some viewers see him as rather petty and vengeful, feeling like he uses Hannah as an excuse to make his more questionable decisions in the show, especially in the first and second seasons.
- Detractors may also see Clay as a hypocrite, like when he admonishes Tyler Down for stalking Hannah and taking pictures of her and Courtney kissing in the privacy of Hannah's home, only then for Clay himself to take a picture of Tyler butt-naked while he's at home and share the photo with everyone at school to spite him.
- Even if Monty was a sociopath, many thought it was selfish of him and his friends to frame Monty for murdering Bryce to save themselves.
- Critics also argue that Clay is overly cautious or slow when it comes to listening to the tapes, given how urgent the tapes are and how they play a role in Hannah's suicide.
- Some critics think that he shouldn't have listened to the tapes by himself and that, instead, he should have given them to the police.
- Critics do not like his destructive and jerkish behaviour in Season 4, that seems to come out of nowhere and to add drama. He is very rude to all of his friends and even insults Justin for being an orphan, while also unapologetically leaving Zach in a crashed car. He also is somehow not taken to justice for being in a room with an unconscious girl (who he thought of raping), grabbing an officer's gun and threatening to massacre multiple innocent people but instead gets let off with a slap on the wrist, which feels very unrealistic and gives a bad mindset that such crimes are okay to commit.
