~ Clavius |
Sir Clavius, also known as King Clavius or just Clavius for short, is the main antagonist of the 1997 animated fantasy film sequel The Swan Princess II: Escape from Castle Mountain. He is a disgraceful magician who captured Prince Derek's mother, Queen Uberta, and stole the magical orb of the Forbidden Arts, so he can plan to conquer the world.
He was voiced by Jake Williamson and his singing voice was provided by Michael Lanning. However, Williamson does his lines in the "No Fear" rap over the end credits.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- Some of the comedic moments involving Clavius āācan actually be funny and hilarious.
- He is somewhat tragic, as he considered Rothbart almost like a brother and best friend, and he was incredibly bitter and saddened by Rothbart's betrayal of him, as well as taking all the forbidden arts that Clavius āātaught Rothbart for himself and relocated Clavius āāin a mountain for a long time. This explains Clavius' desire to surpass Rothbart and outdo him in everything due to the fact that Rothbart humiliated him mentally and physically (which he partially succeeded in by temporarily becoming a monarch, which Rothbart failed to do).
- The song "You Gotta Love It!" can rightfully be considered one of the best in the franchise for the reason that it is memorable for its soundtrack, the lyrics, and it has a jazzy feel to it that suits it perfectly. Also, Michael Lanning did a good job singing the song.
- He sometimes makes you sympathize with him because he is essentially a scapegoat, as he often gets hurt more than any other character in the franchise. Also, his death by volcanic eruption is a bit too brutal to some people, especially to those who compared him to Rothbart and Zelda, who died in much less brutal ways (not to mention the other villains).
- He has a pretty stylish design that suits him.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- One of the main reasons why some people dislike him is because he is played for laughs so often that he comes off as pathetic. Often the humor around him is based on how he gets irritated from Queen Uberta (who infamously took Princess Odetteās role as the damsel-in-distress for the majority of the second film) because of her constant talks and his attempts to stop it, which makes him look quite ridiculous.
- His old man appearance adds to the confusion, and while this appearance makes him look like a typical magician, almost similar to Merlin from The Sword in the Stone, but a loser, the constant ridicule makes him not be taken seriously as a villain at all, since it seems like he is just an old man from a nursing home who has clearly gone crazy and imagines that it is the Middle Ages
- His cliched villainous laugh is sometimes annoying, especially considering there's a lot of it in the film.
- Its basic "take over the world" motif is overused and trite, and is usually done primarily for antagonists who are of little interest, even to the creators themselves (It should be noted, however, that the motives of the franchise's other villains also leave much to be desired).
- Jake Williamson voices the character as if he were an old man with a nihilistic outlook on life who doesn't like anything and is annoyed by everything. Not only does this make the character seem less of a villain, but it's also not a pleasant voice to listen to.
- His cliched expression with the equally cliched "NOOOOO!" is not only unpleasant to hear, but also so ridiculous in its manifestation that it immediately brings to mind Darth Vader's "NO!", which has become a meme.
