Christopher "Chris" Thorndyke is the deuteragonist in the anime show Sonic X. He is the only child of tech CEO Nelson and actress Lindsey Thorndyke, grandson to Chuck, and nephew to Sam Speed. He tends to get lonely due to his parents being away from home for a long period of time due to their careers keeping them from being able to spend quality time with him.
He was voiced by Sanae Kobayashi as a child, Masakazu Morita as a teenager in the Japanese version, Suzanne Goldish as a pre-teen, and by Michael Sinterniklaas as a teenager in the English version.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- He has a kind personality and always cares about his friends.
- He's the first human character in Sonic franchise to have suitable design and not uncanny valley, besides Eggman.
- He's the most developed human character in the Sonic franchise.
- He's lonely and his family are busy with gaining more money so he lives with maid instead
- He was nice to his family and was understanding to them even after they lied to him and broke their promise.
- He is very brave and is willing to take risks to help others, like saving Sonic from drowning despite being aquaphobic and sacrificing a chance to return to his home world by choosing to help Sonic and his friends in Mobius. Even in the first two seasons, Chris has shown to be able to do some things himself in tight situations, such as freeing his friends and family from King Boom Boo's grasp.
- Even though he makes selfish decisions (such as freezing time on two worlds for his own happiness), he learns from his mistakes and tries to right his wrongs.
- His reception improved as his character developed in Season 3, where he matured into a more likeable character and became more useful by helping Sonic and his friends through supporting them with his inventions.
- He is mostly liked (or at least seen as a decent character) in Japan compared the West, and Japanese fans see Dr. Eggman's speech towards Chris to be very harsh.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- His reception is more radically polarized in the West, with many being interested in action and story progression and seeing Chris' character as not being out-of-place.
- With Sonic X being a human-centered adaptation, many see Chris and other human characters as being unnecessary and take away the focus from the Mobian characters.
- He is seen as a spotlight hoarder who substitutes for the roles from other fan favorite Mobian characters, such as replacing Tails as Sonic's best friend, and also replaced Amy Rose as the one who reasoned with Shadow to fulfil Maria's true promise and redeemed him and the fact that Amy was present only showed that she could have easily taken over like her mainstream counterpart had, even if Chris make more sense.
- He was criticized for being useless during the first two seasons, although he saved and helped Sonic and his friends multiple times
- His attachment with Sonic is seen as childish and annoying, especially when he froze time just because he didn't want Sonic to leave him.
- Detractors see Chris as immature and whiny due to how he often complains about his life despite being rich and find it hard to relate to him, weirdly enough he didn't complain about money, he just wanted to live with his family.
